Boobies

October 7th, 2010

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness month. But you knew that already, right? Unless you’re a total skimmer, you also know how very important the subject of breast health is to me. Instead of wearing a pink shirt, changing my facebook picture pink, or some other way to mark the month, I’m being proactive. Well, sort of procrastinately proactive but whatev.

I’m in the high risk group for breast cancer, even though I’m BRCA 1 and 2 negative. I was supposed to have my semi-annual mammagram and MRI in December, but I was pregnant so we had to cancel and, um, I sort of never made another appointment. I’m supposed to go twice a year and it’s been 16 months since I’ve been.

In honor of breast cancer awareness month, I’m calling today to make my appointment. What about you? Have you been putting off your breast health?

Good for you! I am not particularly high-risk for breast cancer, so I’ve never had a mammogram, but I do check my breasts regularly. And I recently got proactive about skin cancer prevention and went to the dermatologist for a mole check. I felt very pleased with myself.

    Good luck with your appointment!

Ditto Jess – Good for you! I had a mammogram this past summer when I found a lump and you know what? It wasn’t too bad. Maybe I just had a great tech or something, but it’s not something I’d put off because of anticipated pain (embarrassment, yes, but not pain). Now a colonoscopy? That’s something I’m NOT looking forward to. At all.

I had a mammogram and breast ultrasound yesterday. It really wasn’t related at all to a breast cancer concern, but it’s kind of nice to know that all is well. Also, while it was uncomfortable, it certainly wasn’t the end of the world.

Hi Erica! I know I haven’t commented much but I’m still around. I read you before you had kids, and I love reading about your adventures with kids!

I’m so glad you are sending this out. People need to be reminded. I had a mammo in April ’09 and it was fine. I found my lump in December of ’09 and (being the procrastinator I am )then went to the docs in Janurary to find it was cancer. So, the moral of that story is….don’t procrastinate! My mammo in April was fine, so imagine my surprise when a lump turned to cancer within 8 months.

I’m the queen of procrastination. If I hadn’t found the lump myself, I would have waited until April for my yearly, wait….no….I probably would have procrastinated for months and months after.

The good news is, I’m fine. 9 months later, I’m done with treatment, didn’t have to have chemo and everything looks great. Had I waited any longer….the results could have been much different.

Sorry to hijack your comments! I’ll get off the soapbox now!

    HUGS!
    grace
