Preparations are underway

April 5th, 2010

Things I still need to do before the baby arrives:

* Go through all of the baby stuff we have in storage and wash it all with bleach. *shudder*
* Go through all of Maddie’s baby clothes and pull out anything that’s gender neutral for The Boy to use, send the awesome things to Mama Bub, and sell the rest.
* Put the nursery together – Get the crib out of storage, swap furniture from Maddie’s room to the nursery, put together Maddie’s new dresser and big girl bed, rearrange her room so that all this new furniture actually fits in there.
* Make a bunch of meals that I can freeze so that we’ll eat somewhat decently in those chaotic first couple of weeks.
* Pack a hospital bag.

Things I’ve already done:

* Procured a love seat/sofa bed from my Dad and his wife for the nursery. It totally matches and they didn’t need it anymore. Now I’ve got a place to sit and nurse AND a bed for guests! SCORE!
* Bought a few adorable tiny outfits.
* I’m shaving my legs every other day so that in the event of surprise labor, my legs won’t ever be more than one day away from having been shaved.
* I’m also keeping my toes polished and heels pumiced. Because obviously, the highest priority is my personal grooming. Never mind that when I’m having this baby if my doctor’s more concerned about the state of my leg hair and toenails, then we’ve got a serious problem.

So, you can see that I’m woefully behind on the important things. What can you do to help? I’m so glad you asked!! I need some recipes for meals that freeze well. I’m going to make a lasagna, but other than that, I’m totally stumped.

And if you want to come over and move furniture, that’d be awesome, too.

I have a co-worker who used to have one of those stores where you go prepare food to freeze & heat later. She closed it last summer, so when she’s back in the office tomorrow I’m going to ask her if she’d be willing to share some recipes.

If you do a google search for “OAMC” (once a month cooking) you might get some ideas too. Just, you know, don’t you dare spend an entire day on your feet cooking. It’s just a good resource for make-ahead recipes.

    Chicken Pot Pie
1 1/2 lbs chicken breast, cubed
    bag frozen peas & carrots
    small onion, diced
    can of chicken broth
    pack of chicken gravy (dry)
    1 frozen pie crust.

Boil chicken in chicken broth, cook about 20-30 min until cooked through. Add veggies and gravy pack and mix well. Add ingredients into a pie dish. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Top pie dish with the pie crust. Either tuck in or pinch the edges around the dish. Make a few slits in the top of the pie to ventilate.
*If your oven runs super hot – take foil and fold over to cover the edges of the pie crust to prevent the edges burning.
Cook appx 20-25 min (or according to pie crist instructions). Freeze or refrigerates well.

** Bear Creek makes some incredible instant soups that are family sized. All you need are 8 cups of water, and to make it more personal maybe 1-2 additional ingredients, if you feel like it. The soups also freeze well.

Oh, chili freezes well. Pretty much any casserole should freeze well. Homemade baked beans and homemade brown bread would freeze well, too!

How fun! Gerald will be doing all this cooking, right? Aren’t you supposed to stay off your feet? Enjoy watching him labor in the kitchen, hon!

Frankly, I think you’ve got your priorities in the right spot.

I went into early labor and not only did I miss my opportunity to shave my legs, but my wax appt. and my pedicure appt. had be missed. Needless to say, I was a hot mess while delivering.

Beef and Veggie Soup. Add lots of fresh veggies like carrots, cabbage, turnips, red potatoes, celery, etc.,, a sliced up roast, seasonings (as you see fit), water, etc. It freezes really well and is easy to reheat single portions & family portions depending upon the size containers you use.

Also, I second the chili recommendation too.

    YAY for baby girl clothes!

I spent most of the last weeks of my last pregnancy trying to figure out how to best time a pedicure so that I would have pretty toes while in the hospital. If I go into labor today, I’m screwed.

You must post the freezable recipes you use, otherwise we’ll be eating frozen pizza for eight weeks straight.

I agree with Korinna, you’ve got your priorities in order! I remember how excited I was to set up everything for Zoe and then before Eliza was born, all those tasks just seemed onerous.

Sounds like you need to call in reinforcements. Have a “set up baby’s nursery” party and get people to help you.

But remember, babies need SO LITTLE in the very beginning. Toys, most of the clothes, even the nursery can come with time. What he’ll need more than anything is a healthy, happy, excited you!

I’m not great at making freezer meals, but I have a good site for you to check out. http://www.moneysavingmom.com/ does freezer cooking days at least once a month. She generally posts recipes. Lots of ideas.
