Reaching the Maximum Out of Pocket

March 10th, 2010

I took the Madster to a pediatric ENT yesterday on the recommendation of her pediatrician. My poor girl has had more ear infections and bouts of strep throat than any other child I know. She spends two weeks on antibiotics, gets well, and within a month is sick again. At first we attributed it to the evil daycare germs, but then began to wonder if she wasn’t reinfecting herself. Turns out, it’s been her all along.

The ENT said that it’s fairly obvious to him that Maddie’s reinfecting herself and it’s not coming from outside sources. Her tonsils looked ok yesterday, but the lymph nodes that they drain into are distended from being filled so often. She’s got fluid built up behind one eardrum and the other is protracted. The ENT believes she’ll benefit greatly from having a tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy and ear tubes placed. This doesn’t come as a total surprise, but still.

It’s a day surgery, so that’s nice. And she’ll need about a week to recover. We’re going to go ahead and have it done right away so that she can have undivided attention during recovery instead of dealing with a new baby at the same time.

I saw my OB this afternoon for a follow-up. Things are going well. He reduced the amount of procardia that I’m taking and relaxed some of my restrictions. So, YAY! for that. I go back in two weeks for a full blood work-up and sonogram. I’m still taking it easy because as much as I’d like to explode in a flurry of activity, I sure as hell don’t want to end up in the hospital for the next six weeks, you know? Although, it was pretty damn nice being waited on hand and foot and not having a kid running around like some kind of deranged hellbeast. OH! OW! Contractions! I’d better get to the hospital right away! (Think Gerald will fall for it?)

Yeah for lifted restrictions. I’m glad that you’re still taking it easy though.

And poor Maddie. I hope all that goes well. Hang in there…both of you.

YAY for not being on strict bed rest! Sorry about Maddie, I bet it will go smoothly, but I’m sure it’s nerve wracking.

Gah, medical bills are right up there with “softener salt” in terms of UNFUN things adults have to buy. But I think you will be so happy to have Maddie’s surgery- Marin’s ear tubes were AWESOME- and we don’t regret it at all.

Keep taking it easy though, chica… as you said, no long hospital stays, or worse yet, preemie baby!

I fully admit that a couple of days of hospital bed rest sounds kind of glorious. Provided there’s no actual danger to the fetus of course. That makes me sound like an ass, doesn’t it?

Everyone I know who has gone the tubes route has been THRILLED with the results. Plus kids look super cute in a hospital gown.

Oh poor Mad. Ear tubes were a total MIRACLE for Ava. She went from CONSTANT, back-to-back infections to literally NONE since.

Do your relaxed restrictions mean you can drive three hours to sit on my couch? No? well it was worth a shot….

Oh, good luck to Maddie with her surgery! I’m sure she’ll be a rock star, but it’s always so gut-wrenching to see little ones in hospital gowns. Hope the surgery helps!

Aww, poor Maddie. But hey, if you really have a maximum OOP, it’ll be a good year for you! Since you’ll be giving birth and all anyway. From that perspective it’s great to cram everything medical into one year.

I’d be interested in knowing how much change you see after the surgery and how the recovery process goes. We’re on our second set of tubes and decided to hold off on the adenoidectomy. The tubes alone are a miracle (a miracle!!), but I have a feeling that the adenoids may be coming down the pike.

We’ve gone back and forth on the tubes for Pinepple and are still attributing all of her ear infections to those darned daycare germs…we’re still in a holding pattern. I’m interested to hear how Maddie’s surgery turns out…oh – and sorry about your pink eye! We had a round of that recently, too – ick.

When it rains it pours, eh? I’m thinking of you all. Hope Maddie’s ears get fixed quick and easy and your babe stays put in that belleh!

Thank goodness she’s getting her tonsils out when she’s little. My daughter was almost 18 and it was a nightmare. They say the little ones get though it much easier and faster…..although, a week recovery seems like to short a time. I’d plan for 2 weeks…..just in case!

    HUGS!
