Baby Names, Revisited
Now that we’re 100% sure that I’m gestating a Little Man, let’s go back to the name discussion, shall we?
Gerald and I have talked since my name post and came up with this list of possibilities:
Dexter – Dex
Declan
Malcolm – Mal
Oliver – Olly
Samuel – Sam
Xavier
Angus – Gus
Ronan/Rowan
Phineaus – Fin
You’ll notice that my personal favorite, Theodore, is no longer a contender. This is because my husband hates me the name. However, he’s decided that Malcolm isn’t so bad after all, so bonus there. I went through the Baby Name Wizard book and website and came up with a list of names I liked. I then ran them by Gerald and the remaining names are the ones we both agree should be on the list.
So, my faithful and opinionated readers, what say you? Now listen, if you hate our choices like poison, it’s cool to say so. Just don’t go talking shit about our mamas and we’ll be fine. Oh, and don’t forget the rest of the kid’s name will be … Gerald Henderson.
Discuss.

My favorites are probably Dexter and Oliver. However, with the repeating R sound in the LN, I get a little tongue tied when I try to say the FN and LN together. So when considering the name as a whole, I prefer Samuel. A close second would be Phineaus.
I like Declan, Malcolm, Rowan, and Oliver. Angus makes me think of beef – and also the Colonel Angus skit that Christopher Walken did on SNL.
I think my favorite from your (fantastic!) list is Oliver. Oliver Gerald Henderson. I love Ollie/Olly for a little guy. I can just picture him- all round faced and cherub-looking….
I really love all of the other names on the list. The only one that causes me to pause is Angus, but I really love the nickname Gus, so that overrides it.
I can’t WAIT to witness this all unfold! How perfect- one little girl and one little boy!
I think a two syllable name sounds better with a three syllable last name. Of the names listed I vote for Rowan. They are all cute except Angus, please not Angus. Also Xavier is tricky to pronounce…
How funny you say that, Laurie. My name is 3 and 3 – Erica Henderson – so it just sounds normal to me to hear 3 and 3.
Also, I’m cracking up over the fact that y’all HATE Angus.
Love Dexter. Tried to sell it to the husband for The Lad to no avail. Like Malcolm, but seems just a little matchy-matchy with Maddie. (Says the woman whose children’s names sound like East and West when you say them too fast … )
Love Oliver and Samuel. I also like Fin, but don’t love Phinaeus.
OK, I like lots of them. Some I like only the name or the nickname but not both. For example, I like Malcolm but I still can’t get behind Mal for a boy, and I like Sam but Samuel sounds too serious for me. Names I like: Declan, Oliver, Ronan. But I think Ronan could be too bumpy with your last name.
My oldest’s name is Oliver, so I am partial to that one. Second choice would be Phineaus, because I think a little boy that you can call Fin would be the cutest. And I think that Angus/Gus is awesome too.
Hiya! I happen to think Angus is an ADORABLE name. Maddie and Gus Henderson!! YES. Also, there is a movie by that name, right? I love that movie. I’ll be the nut that likes Xavier as well. That way both kids have three syllable, full names. Oliver is lovely, too. Lastly, Colm or Cole would be nice nicknames for Malcolm is Mal was too feminine.
What about August with the nickname Gus? Anything but Angus!!!
GUS!!!
I have found that kids will call eachother by the first syllable, followed by “ie” even if that is not a common nickname. So be prepared that you might also end up with others calling him Dexie, Finnie, etc. Our friends have a son named Logan, who ended up being called “Logie” or (the inevitable variation) “Lugie.”
Well, Gerald just confessed that Angus was only on the list because he was humoring me. So, no Gus.
My last baby, had she been of a more masculine persuasion, was to have been Declan Joseph, so obviously I like Declan. I also like Dexter (Dex), though he is the serial killer with a heart of gold, and while I’m not a huge fan of Phineas, I do like the name Finn (two Ns, just my own preference).
Oliver, Oliver, Oliver. Seriously, it’s not only the cutest name, but Ollie is probably the cutest nickname ever. Whenever I hear it I think of the musical Oliver and that cute little blond boy singing “Who will buyyyyy my beautiful roses….”
I love Oliver, Malcom and Dexter in no particular order. I’ve never heard of Declan. Have I been in a cave?
I was for Malcolm but then I agree with the 2 M’s comment, hence why my favorite girl’s A name I didn’t push for with A already for boy. I would say Declan or Xavier next, I just think from a teacher’s perspective that the less teasing over things as possible with a name the better. At least it’s not a last name issue. I also nix Rowan for a boy’s name because I have only heard it as a girl’s name.
Samuel … Sam is my favorite. It’s my son’s name
How cute is the pairing of Maddie and Ollie (I kinda like “ie” instead of “y” for a boy, but that’s just me)? And to repeat a couple of others, I’ve only heard Rowan as a girl’s name and I definitely love Finn, too, but with two n’s. Such fun – thanks for letting us participate. (Also, boo to Gerald for teasing you with Angus.)
Well, for ME Angus is a big no because my friend had a psycho dog named Angus, which I always loathed and who eventually had to be put down for attacking another dog.
Also I have to agree with Jana that I’ve only heard Rowan as a girl’s name, HOWEVER, I like it a lot and I think the SOUND of it is totally unisex, and possibly even leaning more to the masculine side.
Overall, though, my favorites are still Malcolm and Declan. (Dexter is also a no for ME because of that creapy Dexter show. Because I’m a big baby and hate shows about crime/criminals.)
Oliver – followed closely by Rowan. Nothing disgusting rhymes with them and they would sound great coming over a PA system at a football game (the criteria my husband used to shoot down all the names I wanted for our two boys. Imagine it….”And starting at full back, number 53, ROOOOOOOWAN Yourlastname!”.
I like Kieran, too…..just to toss that out….
I LOVE Oliver and have always been a fan of Sam. Declan is growing on me. Unusual and studly.
My favourite is Oliver, but that’s just because it is “my” boy’s name. I might never have one, but if I do, that may be one we go for. I do have a fondness for Dexter though, and think Dex is such a cute nickname.
Saw your tweet re: Max. Have you considered Maxon for the full name? I’m partial to Maxwell, though – that’s my son’s name.
Oh, I love Samuel, Declan, and Rowan. My friend had Rowan on her list, but it is no longer in contention to my knowledge. I think it’s great for a little boy.
Also wanted to suggest Deacon which is so similar to Declan.
I definitely like Samuel and Oliver (but not Olly). I have trouble with Angus (it sounds like Agnes hmm).
