Baby Names! YAY!

December 4th, 2009

I’m getting a very strong “boy” vibe with this pregnancy. When I was pregnant with Maddie, I consistently referred to the baby as “she” even before we knew she was a girl. This time, I’m calling the baby “he,” even when I’m thinking to myself. Of course, I could be way off base but I think we ought to concentrate on boy’s names this go ’round.

(Just for the record, we have a girl’s name picked out already. Since Maddie’s named after our mothers, the second girl will be named after our grandmothers.)

Here’s the criteria for a boy’s name:
Our hypothetical last name is Henderson
The middle name must be Gerald. (Henderson family tradition dictates that the son’s middle name is the father’s first name.)
I’d like it to have a nickname like Madeleine does. We may not use it, but it’s nice to have the option.

Here are some names that I like:
Beckett (Beck)
Cooper (Coop)
Mason
Lucas (Luke)
Malcolm (Mal)
Nathaniel (Nate)
Samuel (Sam)
Theodore (Theo)

Gerald doesn’t like Beckett or Malcolm. He’s ok with Cooper. I haven’t asked him about the rest.

What other names should we consider? What do you like on my list? What do you hate?

ummm…pardon me but with the hypothetical last name of henderson…..
    aren’t you required to pick

    harry?

  2. Jess on December 4, 2009 12:10 pm

I like Cooper, but I’m not sure about Coop as a nickname. I do like Beckett so I’m sorry Gerald isn’t a fan. I love Nathaniel/Nate. I do not like Malcolm very much and especially not Mal as a nickname. (I think of Mal as a girl nickname, for Mallory.)

Time for a post to Swistle Baby Names! Or will you wait until you have a definitive answer on the sex?

I like Theodore, Samuel and Nathaniel. In face, I LOVE Samuel. Sam and Maddie! What about Benjamin? Kind of a mouthful, but you do have other long names in the mix.

I don’t love Becket or Cooper either, but I don’t hate them.

  4. Becky on December 4, 2009 12:26 pm

I’m with Jess. I like Cooper, but Coop seems kind of douchey to me. Beckett I already tweeted you about. I will call him Becky, so be warned. I recently met a co-worker’s son whose name was Mal and it took me about an hour to figure out that it was not Mel. So keep that in mind. It could be a lifelong pain in the ass.

Theo’s my favorite, and I like Sam too.

I like Cooper, but with your last name, it sounds a bit law firm-ish (and a little too close to the name of a new anchor). Samuel and Theo are my favorites. But I adore Nate as well. I had Nathaniel/Nate on my baby name lists all three times, but my hubby shot it down each time.

  6. Jana on December 4, 2009 1:27 pm

    Sorry, should say NEWS anchor.

I normally just lurk, but man, I love baby names. I LOOOOOVE Cooper. We strongly considered it for our little man, but I didn’t like it with our hypothetical last name of Bauer. One of my BFF’s named her son Beckett and he’s a doll, so that’s a great name. And I realize this going to make me sound like a nerd, but Mal/Malcolm makes me think of Nathan Fillion’s character from Firefly. So my vote (which I’m sure counts for SO.MUCH.) is for Cooper. :)

Pick a name that sounds good when you are screaming it from the front (or back) door of your house. One that is easy to say so you don’t look like an idiot fucking up your own kids name when you are pissed at them.

    That said —

I like Cooper Gerald and Sam Gerald, not Samuel Gerald.

    peace…

Man, of those Beckett and Malcolm are my TOP choices.

    Barring those, Nathanial.

  10. Tess on December 4, 2009 2:24 pm

    NATE THE GREAT.

  11. Erica on December 4, 2009 2:28 pm

Tess – Bless you for the Malcolm love. I was starting to be sad that no one else liked it.

  12. Lauren on December 4, 2009 3:51 pm

I am a big fan of Nate! Lucas and Malcom would be 2nd & 3rd!

  13. Penny on December 4, 2009 3:52 pm

I like all of them but Lucas, but that’s because it reminds of “mucus”. I do like the nickname Luke though. No other suggestions – boys names were so hard. I’m lucky we had a good family name to fall back on.

Unfortunately you have to consider pop culture with baby names, which is what I always think of first … (we wanted to name our baby hannah if it was a girl until hannah montana came on the scene). You also need to think of how kids will use it as a mean name. That said

Beckett I like, but I think of Beckham for some reason
    Cooper pooper
Mason has no shortening, unless you go with mace
Lucas I love, I wanted to name our kid lucas but we couldn’t have a name that ended with an “s” or it would end up sounding like “Luca Sparkingathome” and you do have to think of mucus.
    Malcom in the middle
Nathaniel is one I would choose for my next boy as well, I like it a lot
    Spamuel
Theodore makes me think of theo huxtable, which isn’t bad, but I always hear people doing a mock bill cosby voice going “Theeeooo, pudddiiiing”

    so that’s my two cents

  15. Kate on December 4, 2009 6:37 pm

    Spencer (Spence)
    Jackson (Jack)

  16. Lizzie on December 4, 2009 9:08 pm

I know a fellow named Alvin and he’s so badass no one would ever mention anything about chipmunks around him. My boy is Gus – pretty great name if you ask me. And since you are asking me, I love Malcolm, Theo and Coop. Awesome names.

  17. Swistle on December 5, 2009 6:42 am

Malcolm is my favorite, but I find it difficult to say with Madeleine/Maddie.

Theodore and Nathaniel are my favorites with Madeleine: good style match, but the sounds are very different so it doesn’t tangle my tongue up the way “Madeline and Malcolm” does.

  18. Sarah on December 5, 2009 8:53 am

Well Beckett was the name we went into the delivery room ready to use for Eli, so I definitely like it. I will caution though, that my immediate reaction upon being handed the baby was, “Well, Beckett’s not a BABY name!”
But maybe it just didn’t work on my personal baby.
I love Malcolm, Samuel, and Lucas.

  19. Mommy Daisy on December 5, 2009 11:49 am

My favorites on your list are Cooper, Samuel, and Nathaniel.

LOL I just realized that Cooper “Henderson” (but with your actual last name) is the reverse of a famous name. Or, well, at least a well-known person. I don’t think that matters, though, I still really like it.

  20. Jen on December 5, 2009 2:07 pm

Love Coop, Luke & Theo. Brody was almost Alexander (Alec), but we had a last minute change up.

  21. Devan on December 5, 2009 8:01 pm

Love Beckett! I also like Benjamin

  22. Jenna on December 7, 2009 2:03 pm

I agree with Swistle about the issue with Malcolm and Maddie. Not so easy to say together. Nathan or Nathaniel is GREAT. So is Benjamin. I like Cooper but have had the name ruined for me by a neighbor kid back in CA.

Hmmmm, perhaps I’ll think of something once my second kid starts sleeping for more than 2o minutes at a time. When will that be??

(oh, wait. Forget I said that. Your second will sleep LIKE A DREAM.)

  23. Cindy on December 8, 2009 8:36 am

Of the options given, I like Mason, lucas and Malcolm. Jordan and Morgan are two other faves.

I’ve only ever had cats to name, so I love vicariously participating in baby naming!!
