Side Effects May Vary

November 1st, 2009

15 months and one week after my gastric bypass I reached my pre-plastic surgery goal weight. I’ve lost 10 lbs since I got pregnant, but it’s not been intentional. I fully expect it to come back and then some as soon as the morning sickness disappears. As you would expect, life is inexplicably better now that I’m no longer morbidly obese. However, there are some downsides for which I wasn’t prepared.

Being Cold All The Time – Seriously, I’m in a constant state of freezing. Goosebumps are my new permanent accessory. I’m only comfortable at temperatures of 78 and above. It was actually kind of nice this summer to not be sweaty and hot as hell all the time, but now that the weather’s gotten cooler things are unbearable. And, of course, nothing from last winter fits anymore.

Being Bony Is Uncomfortable – My tailbone is all RIGHT THERE now. Sitting isn’t quite as “cushy” as it used to be, if you catch my drift. Also, my knees, pelvis and ribs are all sharp and hurty when I lay down. Getting comfortable at night requires extra pillows and poses that could probably be classified as yoga.

Even with these annoyances, I’m still so very grateful that I was given the opportunity to have the surgery. My life is SO! MUCH! better than it was when I weighed 300 lbs.

Yeah, I have certain spots of my body that are always really bony- like even though I carry weight in my HIPS, my ASS is kind of flat and small for my actual body size, and as soon as I sit, those bones are poking right through and grinding into the chair. It also prevented sitting cutely on Jim’s lap at parties and such back when we were dating.
I never even thought about the extra comfort being overweight would provide… Like, not having to bring a bleacher cushion when I went to soccer games. Interesting.

Whenever I lose weight I notice I’m chillier. Excellent insulation, fat is.

They say that the chilly thing will happen with rapid weight loss. My friend has lost 50 lbs in the last 6 months or so and is noticing she is much cooler now too. Never thought about all the boniness, but I’m sure you can take it. :)

Oh man, that tailbone! I cannot sit on the ground for more than 20 minutes anymore. I think I need to buy floor cushions for my house. Also, the cold. I used to be always cold before WLS but now it’s worse. I think I turned my heated blanket on 3 months ago.

dress in layers, lots and lots of layers. In the winter time here I normally freeze my ass off. Because of all the layers each spring when I can finally shed them, people always ask if I have lost weight, it took me years to put those two facts together.

    Congrats on the weight loss!
