Fun Fact Friday – the TV edition

August 28th, 2009

* Did I tell you that we canceled our DirecTV and TiVo subscriptions? We were paying over $120 a month and hardly ever watched TV. We canceled it last month and now I’m watching more TV than ever. We’re using Hulu and Netflix Instant Watch. It’s costing us less than 1/4 of what we used to pay and we’re happier.

* Gerald and I are in love with Defying Gravity. Watch it, or I’ll stab you.

* I’ve been watching Arrested Development after work. I didn’t watch it first go ’round, and I realize this makes me a colossal fool. The show is absolute perfection.

* I’ve started watching Lost. Again, I didn’t watch it when it first came on. Gerald did, but stopped last season. So, we’re watching it together from the beginning. I’ve only seen 3 episodes, but I can confidently say that shit is effed up.

* We’re also watching Warehouse 13 on SyFy. WTF is up with SciFi changing the spelling of the network? I mean, really? How asinine is “SyFy?” If 99% of the shows I like weren’t on that network, I’d boycott.

* Speaking of more shows on that network, do you watch Eureka? You should be. See the aforementioned stabbing.

Ok, so what else should we be watching?

I LOVE Warehouse 13 and Eureka! And I feel the same way about the “SyFy” crap. How douchey is that?

Do you watch Leverage? It’s on TNT. What about Psych on USA? Love them both.

I’ll have to check out Defying Gravity. I don’t think I’ve ever even heard of it, which… a TV show I don’t know about? Inconceivable!

Um, we currently really like The Tudors. Probably not everybody’s cup of tea, but I HEART.

    2 things.

    1) Defying Gravity- I’m hooked. At first I thought it was weird and too hard to follow, but I rewatched the episodes on Hulu and love it!

    2) Matt and I just had a long conversation about SciFi shanging to SyFy…which I think it totally stupid.

The Wire, though it did take me a few episodes to get hooked. Now I daily repress the urge to say things like, “You feel me, motherfucker?”

I love Dexter with all my heart. My husband wanted to watch Lost from the beginning, but I refused. I’ve heard it’s pretty confusing and no one really knows what the hell is going on. No thanks!

Late to Arrested Development is better than never seeing it at all, or (most seriously) not liking it. I can’t believe such people exist if I’m honest.

I’ll second what some other commenters have said – The Wire and Dexter are some of my favourites too. You’ll see lots of people saying The Wire is the best show ever; I certainly don’t disagree.

The Dude and I like our TV, I won’t lie to you. Other recent favourites include The Office, Rescue Me, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Brotherhood, Weeds, and the list goes on…

Isn’t that SyFy thing just plain stupid? Anyway…

We recently watched the entire West Wing series in order and loved it. A little old, but great writing. So is Sports Night. I love me some Aaron Sorkin. Also old, but great is Six Feet Under, but if you love Dexter (and I think I remember you talking about it), then you may have already seen it.

We’re really liking True Blood, Big Love, Weeds, The Office and I hear great things about Rescue Me and that one with Glenn Close that I can never remember the name of (Damages, maybe?).

Have fun! We’ve been looking into dumping our satellite for a similar setup as well. Glad to know we can still catch our favorite shows.

    I’m digging Royal Pains…

Friday Night Lights!! It’s really not all that much about football, the acting is terrific, the show has a great ‘organic’ feel to it (they film it in actual locations in and around Austin), and the character development is worth it for your viewer investment.

The SyFy thing is beyond stupid. I call it “Sif-Eee” every time they flash it. I hate it when people change a perfectly good “i” to a “y”, sheesh. Like wymyn, omg, don’t even get me started.

I am loving True Blood & Hung these days. HBO has another great Sunday night line up.

Yay for women with similarly geeky taste in TV shows! I love almost all of the SciFi (I REFUSE to call it SyFy) original series. Eureka is probably my favorite. Warehouse 13 is growing on me, but I don’t think it’s as good as some of their other stuff. It will be interesting to see how Stargate Universe is this fall.

Also, we did the exact same thing with cutting off (well, in our case cable, not DirecTV) and using Netflix and Hulu. DH set up a mac mini under the TV and got it all hooked up to the TV and stereo. I don’t miss that extra $100 a month AT ALL.

The other shows that we’ve been loving have mostly been BBC. You might try Hustle, MI5, and the IT Crowd. They are great.

Love Defying Gravity as well. Also love Warehouse 13. And I know! What was wrong with SciFi?

    Dexter
    True blood
    The riches
    Weeds
    The sopranos

That’s all i can think of right now
