Housekeeping

March 24th, 2009

So my kid came down with The Pinkeye last week. I took her to the pediatrician on Friday for confirmation and a prescription only to discover that she also had (ANOTHER!) ear infection and some kind of sinusy thing. After a couple of days of meds, both oral and ocular, she’s doing great.

However.

I woke up at 3am with green goop in my eyes. I took my contacts out, cleaned myself up, used some of Maddie’s eye drops and went back to bed. At 7am I tried to open my eyes only to find that one was glued shut by some unspeakable substance. I felt like a tool, but I emailed in sick to work. I mean, I know I’d be pissed if someone came into work with some kind of communicable thing, so even though I felt fine I figured it was best to stay home. Luckily, within 24 hours of starting the antibiotic eye drops The Pinkeye is no longer contagious. Whew.

<Insert clever segue here>

I’m thinking about doing that Mystic Tan stuff. Now that I’m not crazy fat anymore, I’m wearing shorter dresses and maybe even some shorts(!) this year. The only problem (besides having to shave my legs more often (i.e. more than once a damn month)) is that I’m pale. No, I’m really more “clear,” than “pale.” And I’m not working it like Dita. I’m sort of sickly looking. Back in the day I used to tan and I briefly considered starting up again regardless of the health issues. (Hello, vanity!) My husband ixnayed the anningtay by saying that if I started he’d start smoking again. Well, I lost that one, didn’t I?

So, I’m thinking this Mystic Tan shiz may be the answer. Have any of you used it? The local tanning place has a deal where you get unlimited sprays for $50 a month. I’ve read that they last anywhere from five days to a week, so at five tans a month it’s only $10 a piece. I’m willing to splurge on it, but it’s gotta be worth it. I’m not trying to look like an oompa loompa over here.

I used to do Mystic Tanning every once in a while, and while I liked it, I always found it hard to avoid streaking and weird looking hands and feet. I know they tell you how to apply the barrier cream stuff, but it never really worked right for me. But I am also kind of unskilled at that kind of thing. Might I suggest trying it out once before splurging on the monthly fee? The color looks natural and good I think, and totally better for you than tanning beds. Try it!

I had the same issue with wierd looking hands and feet, so I only did it once.

I am also the clear kind of white. Like, I couldn’t have married a blonde or our kids would have been invisible white.

Anyway, I have Mystic tanned and not been pleased with the results. It’s REALLY hard to avoid the streaking. You have to be really well exfoliated and moisturized and well as really skilled with the barrier cream. And, it STINKS. Maybe more on some people than others, but I could always smell it on myself for days. How’s that for a ringing endorsement?

I sort of dig the idea of the Mystic Tan, but I always (ALWAYS) think of that episode of Friends where Ross keeps spraying himself on the same side because he can’t figure out when to turn. HEE!

First of all, I hope you had a fun day at home by yourself while you waited for the pinkeye to clear! YAY!

On the mystic tan front: I did it once before a trip to Hawaii so that I wouldn’t blind people on the beach and I really liked it for about 2 days. Then I started to flake, as in, my skin started to come off in dry, orange-y sheets. Then I looked like an orange and white leper. My skin tends to be super dry and I think the combo of rubbing in sunscreen 8 times a day and the drying sea water may have had something to do with it.

I have no Mystic Tan experience as I am Buffy/Angel translucent myself. I am trying to learn to embrace my complete lack of color. It isn’t working. Even though I would NEVER do it, I sort of long for the days I slathered myself in baby oil and baked myself to a nice, crispy golden brown.

I am as fair (sickly white) as they come, and I got a bright idea once to try the Mystic Tan before a wedding.

Let’s just say I shared the pp experiences. It was not pretty.

I think you should buy the one session and try it out before you buy the packages. I had a hard time avoiding the streaks and it flaked off of me, too. Good luck!

streaking and stinking turned me off from it, but I LOVE the Neutrogena self tanners you can pick up for $10 or so at the store.

I like the foam and the spray.

I’m with Tess on the spray tan reminding me of Ross. Personally I’m just waiting for pale to come back into style.

I don’t know about spray tans.

About two weeks before my wedding I got a spray tan, and I found it highly disturbing, difficult, smelly, splotchy, and gone within a few days.
Disturbing – standing trying not to breathe while what you can only assume is toxic chemicals are “misted” on you
Difficult – I don’t understand the lotion that makes it stay and the lotion that keeps it off. Orange palms, and under the fingernail crap
    Smelly – oh god gross
Splotchy – orange, tan, and clear
Gone within a few days – bye bye monies.

Try to convince husband that the UV rays are good for depression, clinically proven. A tan here and there is fine in my book, as long as you use more fancy pants beds that have low burn ratios. Plus those are the ones that are usually big and luxurious and you can sprawl out in awkward positions for evenness.

I’ve never tried Mystic Tanning before, but I do tan in a tanning bed often. At one session, a chick came in the door and was complaining about the Mystic tan that she had gotten (somewhere else) and wanted to know if they could fix it … that really turned me off from ever trying it. The place I go to has several different level beds so that you can go and never worry about burning!

I used to have a mystic tan monthly account for years because I’m really really white. Never had problems, just follow the directions. The place I went to had a video you watched before you did it the first time. If you use the cream on your palms and soles of your feet, and wipe them off first when you get out, they won’t tan. And I always pulled the hair-net thingie over my face, didn’t want to do my face, I thought that was too much.

Then when I got out, I made sure to wipe down any trickles down my legs or arms or anywhere, which eliminated the streaking.

Never had a problem with my skin having a bad reaction, either. Although it does smell strongly until you shower and I would not shower until the next day to make sure it “set”. Make sure you are prepared to change your sheets the first day as some will rub off on the sheets.

But before you try Mystic Tan, maybe call some salons and see if you can find someone who does it in their home with a handheld sprayer. I hear they are price-competitive and do a much better job than you’d get standing in the machine and it lasts longer too.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. (Note, tanning beds are just as damaging for your skin as suntanning in the sun, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise)

I have no experience with tanning, mystic or otherwise. I have an olivey complexion which does take sun well, even with sunscreen. altho I don’t wear skirts unless they are past my knees and I don’t do shorts, just long capris because my knees are scary and I don’t want anyone to witness them.

My mom uses some complexion cream stuff from Avon that she loves. It doesn’t make her hands orange and it just gives her skin a healthy glow.

Good Luck with whatever you decide & I hope your eye is doing better!

I didn’t like the spray tan, either. But I also liked the Neutrogena stuff. They have a tinted foam, so you can see where you put it or a regular moisturizer-like and you can put it on after the shower.

I have never used any of the spray tans…but have utilized the tanning beds…and I used to be WHITE as a sheet. I have not been tanning in almost a year and I still have some color, but am by NO means tan…but I am not ghostly either. But I was tanning in the high end beds, and I tanned really fast and really even. It was expensive though…$130/month for unlimited…but I would go starting like right now and go for a month…4 days a week which if you purchase the tans individually they are $25 a piece…so I got my moneys worth. Then I did it again in July…and they last for quite some time….the spray tan fades fast…
