OMG

I’ve gushed about tattoo artist Dawn Grace before, so you already know how much I love her style. Well, she’s in Chicago and I happen to be planning a trip to Chicago… can you see where I’m going with this?

I have an appointment with her the morning before I fly home from BlogHer! Can you believe it?? I’m FINALLY going to get a Dawn Grace tattoo. As if BlogHer wasn’t going to be awesome enough!

So, here’s where you come in. I need help deciding what to get. Take a look at her work in Flickr to get an idea of her style. What I’d like to get is a tattoo to commemorate my weight loss/transformation. By the time BlogHer rolls around in July, I’ll be one year post-op and (hopefully) at my goal weight. I want my tattoo to symbolize the drastic changes in my life, but I don’t want anything cheesy like a butterfly or a phoenix. Not that I’m against either of those things, mind you. I just want something more unique. Besides, Gerald has already gotten me a beautiful butterfly bracelet as a 1/2 way to goal present.

I’d love for you to give me some ideas. Send me descriptions, doodles or links. Help a sister out, wouldja? kthanx!

  • DUDE! How cool is that? Just one more reason going to BlogHer is a must, right? I’ll look around at the Flickr stuff and email you if I get a brilliant idea.

  • Wow, her stuff is gorgeous! Do you want to have her do a tattoo involving the butterfly from the bracelet? How big and where are you going to get it?

  • Her tattoos are all so nice but I can’t tear my eyes away from the angry red skin around them! I know they’re all just new and that fades soon, but just thinking about it makes me squirm. Sorry, I’m not much help!

  • Wow – she’s awesome. I have no idea what you should get. Is there a certain symbol that means something special to you? I’ll have to think on it…

  • Love her work, especially the mendhi style ones. I would go for one in black, mendhi style, with abstract beauty (since she clearly has the talent to pull it off) or possibly something botanical (LOVE her trees and vines).

    Keep us posted!!

  • My suggestion would be to look around for designs that you like the look and feel of and explain to her what you’re hoping to get out of your design and why you’re getting it and let her design something for you as that is the best way to get something unique and personal. She may come up with something that will totally work, but you may have never thought of. Especially since she seems to have a specific style that she specialises in (the mehndi and the more whimsical/floral/natural aspects), you should let her create something for you as you generally seek out specific tattoo artists for their specific style.

Most of this should be able to be done via email and the design would generally be finalised long before you travel to Chicago so you have some time to tweak anything that isn’t to your liking.

Flickr is a good resource. I’d also highly recommend the galleries on http://www.bmezine.com. You have to pay to view the galleries after a certain number of pages, but if you’re clever with your search terms you’d likely be able to find more than enough.

If you’re also looking for additional ideas/inspiration, have a look at some of the portfolios of the following artists because they may also push you further in your ideas: Guy Atchinson, Anil Gupta, and Daniel DiMattia.

    Good luck!

  • Wow, she is a wonderful artist and her flickr gallery is gorgeous.

I think one of her awesome medhi designs with a hidden message would be cool – she could work in a butterfly, your highest weight in roman numerals, your initials… something like that. At any rate, that is very exiting to have an appointment with her!

  • I love her botanicals! How about some sort of version of a tree of life, personalized to your taste? It could symbolize your roots in who you truly are, with or without weight; the growth that you’ve been through and will continue to go through, and also the fact that you’re doing it for your life, your daughter’s, your husband’s. It could have a butterfly hovering around it… :>
