I sucked my thumb until I was in my 20s.
There. I’ve told you my most humiliating secret. That’s one less I have to keep, now.

Awwww! I sucked my thumb until I was 10 or so. AND I wet the bed until 11 or 12. And I’ve known people who have done one or both into adulthood, too. It’s not THAT uncommon, no worries.

This seriously IS common.
And speaking of oral fixations, I chew the inside of my mouth as a nervous habit. And I am STILL doing that shit.
My mom recently shared with me that she was well into her 20s when she met my dad and helped her to stop sucking her thumb. I chewed on my cuticles when I am nervous so I think the whole oral fixation thing that Tessie mentioned is very true.
I knew this girl in high school who used to suck on her middle and ring fingers. She’s married with 2 kids now, and she told me she still does. Not sure WHY she told me, as we’ve seen each other ONCE in the 20 years since high school, but people always just up and tell me shit like that for some reason. I’ll be checking out at Target, and some stranger behind me in line will tell me that she walked out on her boyfriend because she caught him masturbating to gay porn. But I’m getting off-topic here…
Anyway, no need for humiliation. Perfectly benign habit. It’s not like you’re masturbating to gay porn. Not that there’s anything WRONG with that.

My daughter…you know, the one that JUST graduated, (yeah, I’m fiercely proud of her) sucked her thumb until last year. The only reason she stopped was she had her tonsils out and since she couldn’t even swallow her own spit (I know, gross but true) there was no way she could suck her thumb.
So, to all of you trying to break the habit, getting tonsils out seems to work.
Thank god about the gay porn thing, I was worried….about Amber ; )

I don’t think any less of you. My sister was a serious thumb-sucker for a long time. I think she may still and she’s in her early 20s.
I totally sucked my thumb until I was 14… ? 16?? I think I’ve blocked it out. I didn’t do it during the day after the age of …8… ? but it was the only way i could get to sleep for many, many years. Many different orthodontic contraptions (which thumbsucking no doubt caused the need for) and several jars of yucky tasting anti-nail biting goo couldn’t deter me. It was only after getting a boyfriend that I was able to kick the habit out of sheer and utter terror that he might find out (by, oh say, the way I had NO fingerprint on my left thumb).
Speak your truth, sister. No matter what it is, there are those out here who feel it/did it too.
