Fitnessy Friday

I sat down to write my FFF post and you know what? I got nuthin. I’m fresh out of fun facts.

So, instead of making up some facts for you, I’m going to ask for your help. As I previously mentioned, I’m going to participate in a half marathon in December. This gives me six months to train. I’m determined to walk the 13 miles. Let’s be clear: I don’t have any delusions of actually running.  What I need from you is a point in the right direction toward a training program. And a recommendation for shoes.

  1. Nike+ with an iPod. My wife started using it about a year ago in her training and she will never go back to not using it.

  2. I did the “Couch to 5K” program (C25K.com), stopping just short of finishing because I was pregnant and very nauseous with sore boobs. I liked the program though. It won’t get you all the way to a 1/2 marathon, but it will get you started.

  3. Fitnessy Friday! I love it!

I like Saucony or Brooks for shoes. And you’ll definitely need an ipod, if you don’t already have one. That’s a LONG time to be out there with only your own thoughts to keep you company.

Hal Higdon (Halhigdon.com) has some good programs. Basically, any program that puts you through a couple of shorter walks and one long walk during the week will work. The ones I’ve seen really vary only in # of days per week for training (I suggest 4-I think more is overkill), and what you do during the week. But, as long as you are completing the long runs/walks, you will be able to do the half.

    YAY!

  4. I would hire someone, either by joining a gym and working with a trainer after explaining my goal or hiring a freelance trainer to come work with me.

At least 8 sessions to get me started, preferably 12. Even ONE session will help if you can’t afford more. Although they often run discounts when you buy multiple sessions.

Most important reason to get a trainer to start with; you don’t want to hurt yourself so getting prof advice will go the furthest in avoiding that. You can also ask him/her about shoes and any other equipment, places to practice outside the gym, how much incline to use on the treadmill, etc., all that stuff.

Cannot recommend a trainer highly enough. For *anyone* who is starting out any kind of program or training for an event. Whether they are already in shape or not, trainer trainer TRAINER! (Did I get my point across? hehehe *grins*)

  5. I have friends that swear by Stroller Fit exercise classes. There are probably some in your area (just google it). From what I understand, they do lots of exercises and walks/semi-runs with their kiddos in the strollers. No need for daycare! My friends did some extra training on their own/with a trainer, but said the official run was easy for them after training with an extra 25-40 pounds of baby and stroller.
