Fun Fact Friday: The Nostalgia Edition
* I had my first kiss in the seventh grade at a dance. We were dancing to Bad English “When I see you smile.” Before the actual kiss, my boyfriend had his best friend come up and ask me what I’d do if he (my boyfriend) kissed me. My answer was, “Um, kiss him back?” This is the same boyfriend I went to homecoming with and did illegal things with in the Cleveland Metroparks system.
* My first car was a 1985 Ford Tempo. This was in 1992. I went to high school in a relatively snooty suburb of St. Louis and I routinely parked my Tempo in between Jags and BMWs.
* My first job was working at the florist across the street from my high school. I worked every day after school and on Saturdays. It was my job to run the register, take phone orders and make balloon bouquets. I made $5.00/hr and thought I was RICH. I loved it.
* I went to the senior prom with a girl. As my date.
* My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Moore, was in a wheelchair. The rumor was that her son shot her in the back, but I doubt that’s true. She was a fantastic teacher. While in her class, we watched The Challenger launch on TV. I remember not understanding what happened and wondering why Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Roberts (the fifth grade teacher in the room next door) were crying.
* My mom and I used to watch The Muppet Show every Sunday night on our black and white TV.
* I had two parakeets when I was little. A turquoise one named “Crystal” after the character from Dallas, and a green and yellow one named “Henry.” One day, Henry pecked Crystal to death and I was so upset I made my mom give him away.
* My friends and I used to put our boom boxes in the driveway of one of our houses and dance for hours. We thought we were SO COOL. We danced to Madonna, Sheena Easton and Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam. Oooh, and Janet Jackson. Ah, good times.
* My favorite New Kid was Joey.
* My sister “taught” me how to swim one summer while we were visiting our biological father in Houston. I think I was seven at the time. She threw me into the deep end of the pool, at night, and said, “Swim or die! Jason’s gonna get you!” Needless to say, I swam for my frickin’ life.

The kids I babysat for all liked Joey too, because he was the youngest. Of course, he was still more than ten years older than them and probably more interested in their moms.
“Swim or die!” Awesome. So are you planning on using this tecnique to teach Maddie how to swim?
I watched the Challenger launch in my fourth grade class, too. We had no idea what was going on, either.
And my favorite New Kid was Jon….no idea why. But Joey was pretty cute, too.
Your sister teaching you to swim is the kind of hilarious/horrifying that makes me wonder if siblings are all they’re cracked up to be, after all.
Hey, “When I See You Smile” was one of “our songs” with my high school boyfriend. AND he had a Ford Tempo! We are practically TWINS.
So do you like to swim now or do you have some horrid water phobia?
Dancing in the driveway cracks me up!
I watched The Muppet Show every Sunday night, too. LOVED it! I still occasionally randomly shout out, “Pigs in space!!!!” in a loud booming voice.
I had a parakeet named Harvey Wallbanger. I don’t remember what happened to him.
Ok, I was a senior in high school for the shuttle thing, but I was a teachers aid in a 4th grade class at the time. (I even got paid for it and it was during 3 and 4th period.) The shuttle thing happened while I was in route to the elementary school. When I got there, the teacher was crying and asked if I heard about the shuttle. I said yeah, but I thought she meant, did I know it was going up into space. I didn’t know it had blown. Oh, and the kids in my class, they didn’t have a clue either.
I also had a Ford tempo in 1992, I believe it was an 85.
I had two parakeets, they were named Nick and Nack.
Love the Muppet show and I got videos to watch them with my son when he was younger.
Favorite New Kid? Joey, of course!
Sarah - No, I think we’ll go the traditional route and get Maddie some swimming lessons. : )
Swistle - I am giddy over the fact that we’re practically twins!
Shelly - Horrid phobia. Won’t swim in water I can’t see the bottom of. I even get scared in pools.
this has been my favorite one yet.

I remember watching the Challenger launch too. My teacher’s name was Mr. Scheffler.
JASON is going to get you? GAH! I’m scared of that NOW!
