FINALLY - The Tattoo Post
Without further ado, here they are, along with the accompanying location and reason for getting that particular tattoo.
1. Purple Gecko with Green Eyes - location: inside left ankle
This is my oldest tattoo. I think I was 21 when I got it. I really can’t remember for sure. I got this particular tattoo because for as long as I had wanted tattoos, I wanted a purple gecko with green eyes. No real significance. I just really liked it.
2. Eye of Horus - location: upper left side of my chest.
In tattoo lingo, this one is known as a “fuck up.” The inside of the eye, where the iris would be, was yellow. But apparently, I have some sort of allergy to the yellow ink. It got seriously nasty about 24 hours after I got it. To spare you the gorey details, the yellow portion, and part of the eyebrow were rejected by my immune system. I haven’t gotten it fixed and this was 8 years ago, or so. I hate this tattoo because of the wonkiness and the location. I’m seriously considering getting it lasah’d off.
3. Butterfly - location: right shoulder blade.
I got this on the spur of the moment. A friend of mine wanted a tattoo and asked me to go with her. It was her first and she wanted a hand to squeeze. I saw this in the artist’s portfolio and really liked it. This one is probably six years old.
4. Fish - location: top of right foot
I got this one two years ago, for my 30th birthday. Gerald and I took a trip to the gulf coast to celebrate my birthday and our anniversary. On the last day of our trip, we each got a tattoo. (It was Gerald’s first.) I love this tattoo. I think it’s my favorite. Bonus Trivia Fact: He’s smiling because I inadvertently jerked my foot while the artist was doing the mouth. The top of your foot is chock full of nerves and not a lot of fat to cushion them. Consequently, it’s a very sensitive area to have tattooed.
So, there you have it. I’m still trying to figure out what to get for my “Maddie” tattoo. If you have any suggestions, please weigh in in the comments.

Yay for the tattoo post! I *love* the fish and butterfly tats especially. I have been pondering a Zoe tattoo since her birth ( I had finally decided to get a tattoo to mark my leaving San Francisco but then I got pregnant and that wasn’t going to happen.). I think I’m going to wait because we want a second kid and I would want to include him/her as well. I like stars and would do something small with stars and maybe their initials.
Or I may just totally chicken out and live vicariously through all my inked friends.
cool! I don’t have any, but have considered it. I think I’m too wussy though.
YAAAYYY! I want to hear more about pain levels sometime.
The fish is my favorite.
Nice tats, babe. Makes me want to get one. Or maybe that nose ring…
ZOMG! I have a huge-ass comment typed up and forgot the anti-spam workd and was DENIED! *grumble whine fuss fuss*
ANYhow.
Yours tats are lovely! I particularly like the gecko and the fish. I have a friend at work - the red-haired beauty in my reception photos - that has decided the perfect tattoo for me would be one of the sun coming out from behind the clouds, since my attitude is so positive and nothing gets me down for long. She’s right, it would be perfect for me, but I haven’t yet reached the point that I actively WANT a tattoo. I don’t actively NOT want one, either, though. Well see.
*about to enter security code and if it denies me again, I’m kicking my screen. Waaah*
I love your tats! I saw the bigger pics on Flickr and I’m torn between the fish and the butterfly as my fave. I have one and hate it.
The fish is my favorite too! I think I read somewhere that lasing tattoos off kind of sucks? Like hurts and takes a long time? I’m sure it’s worth it though if you can’t stand the thing.
Jenna - One of my considerations for my Maddie tattoo is that is has to be easily duplicated or added to in case of another child. Not that it’s real likely or anything, but we can’t have our other kid left out.
Devan - It is pretty painful, but totally worth it. (IMO)
Swistle - Um, it hurts. The End, Seriously though, it hurts more if the tattoo is in a place with a lot of nerves and not a lot of fat. My ankle and foot hurt pretty badly, but they were small tattoos that only took 20 minutes or so. The ones on my chest and back hardly hurt at all. The butterfly took 1.5 hours, so it ended up pretty painful really only because of the time.
I’ve heard that the small of your back and anywhere on your head hurt the worst.
Mothra - Do it! Life is short. Let your inner Kat out to play!
Taylor - Sorry about that!
Shelly - We’ll look into a group rate for the lasah-ing!
Tessie - Yeah, I’m sure it hurts but my philosophy is that it hurt to have it put on, so what’s a little more? Also, I think it’d be worth it to be rid of the stupid thing.
I like the fish! This isn’t a “finally” post for me because I’m newish to your blog, but I love it! Apparently tattoos really are addictive.
Nice tattoos! I thought of a suggestion, only because you threw the idea of easily altered in case of another child. Of course, it may be a stupid suggestion, because I often make those types, but what about a tattoo that looks like an anklet chain around your ankle? Then you could have a little “charm” of Maddie’s initials hanging off it, and if there’s another kid, add a charm.
Here is a link to a post with a pic (wow) of the tattoo I got when I had my son. I would like to get a baby bird added in there, and if I ever have more kids, I’ll get another baby bird. Someday I’ll get to the bird.
