Fun Fact Friday

I was going to give you another excuse as to why I’m STILL bogarting Tessie’s Fun Fact Friday, but who are we kidding? I’ve totally stolen the idea and am using it with wanton abandon.

*  I got Maddie a potty chair this week. Now, before you get all judgey about it being “too early” and “she’s only 15 months old!” let me tell you the reason WHY I got it for her. You see, my darling girl has an extreme phobia of flushing toilets. When she needs to be changed in a public restroom, and hears the flushes, she completely loses her shit. Um, that’s her figurative shit, fyi. Anyhow, she’s mental about the whole thing, so I asked the pediatrician about it on Wednesday. She recommended trying to desensitize Maddie some before we get to the point where we need to start potty training. So I got her a realistic looking potty chair as part of the process. She’s currently playing with it as a toy and loves to sit on it. We’re also taking her with us when we go to the bathroom, trying to show her that it’s ok. And at night, when she’s brushing her teeth, I flush the toilet, just to try and get her used to it. I feel really bad about upsetting her, but I figure it’s better for her in the long run. I mean, at some point, she’s going to have to use a toilet, right?

* I’m claustrophobic to the point of sheer and utter panic. I think it probably helps me understand Maddie’s fear of the toilet.

* I once got to interview the Indigo Girls before one of their concerts. It was one of the coolest moments in my life.

* Maddie and I were the exact same weight and length at birth and were both a little early. She was three weeks early and I was four.

* My favorite flower is the Hyacinth. I love the way they smell. For looks alone, I really like Gerber Daisies.

* I am named after my biological father and my mother’s sister who died in infancy.

*My favorite genre of entertainment is paranormal. I love stuff about vampires, witches, werewolves, magic and so on. I don’t believe in any of it, but I find it immensely entertaining.

* I wanted to be a fighter pilot in the Navy after watching Top Gun as a little girl. I’m pretty sure the whole movie was just one long commercial for the Navy, so I bet I’m not the only one.

* My least favorite chore is mopping. Probably because our kitchen is HUGE and it takes eleventy hundred hours to mop. Plus the tile is grey, so you can’t even tell it’s clean. If you’re going to work that hard cleaning something, there should at least be visible results.

* The very first CD I ever bought was The Lost Boys soundtrack. The first CD I ever got as a gift was They Might Be Giants’ Flood (from my friend Becky for my 14th birthday). I still have both of them.

  1. That flushing thing is common! I’ve been reading about it everywhere! It can’t hurt to HAVE a potty, can it? We have one too, and AD’s nowhere near the potty-training stage.

I have the same beef with mopping. Our kitchen runs the entire length of our HOUSE and it’s a huge horrifying project. HATE.

  2. My first CD was the Top Gun soundtrack–how appropriate!

  3. I LIKE Fun Fact Friday, so the more people who join in, the better! Also, I am super jealous of the fact that you got to interview the Indigo Girls. And mopping is my least favorite chore too.

  4. Maybe we should all start doing Fun Fact Friday???

I loved the Lost Boys soundtrack (and movie too).

Am I correct in recalling you’ve only recently discovered Buffy the Vampire Slayer and yet you call yourself a love of that type of thing? The shame you must feel! (Or, if I remembered that wrong, oops, nevermind)

  5. Here is the problem with Fun Fact posts: they make me want more More MORE. Like, a whole post on the namesake thing. A whole post about claustrophobia. ETC.

  6. I like the Fun Fact Friday. It is indeed fun!

Don’t think that sitting Maddie on the potty now is too early. I started Zachariah at this time last year (I was just reading about it in my blog archives). My pediatrician practically laughed at me. I had no hopes of grandeur, but I figured why not sit him on it once in a while and get used to it. He’s still not potty trained, but he will go on it occasionally. Like last night he told me he had to poop before bedtime. I didn’t think he’d do it, but he stood up and said all done. To my surprise, there was a little turd in there. Anyway, it can’t hurt, in my opinion.

  7. Oh I remember buying the Lost Boys record all by myself (OMG seriously dated myself, right!?) I LOVED THAT ALBUM and the movie too! The 1st tapes I bought myself were U2 and UB40 (I think I still like both groups too!) AND I cannot even remember the 1st CD which is weird because it would have been more “recent” then the record or the tapes. HMMM…

We bought out son a potty seat around that time maybe like 18 months because he was interested. It will get used eventually!!!

Least favorite chore: honestly recently all of them… Sigh. I used to sort of enjoy some chores but now BLAH who has the time and energy between work, a toddler, being pregnant, two dogs, yada yada yada….

  8. Wow, I bought you Flood on CD? I don’t think I ever even bought for myself on CD! I got it one way or another, but I had it on cassette for years before I got a CD copy.

Glad to hear I got you such a timeless present all those years ago!

  9. I’m claustrophobic too although it’s much better than it used to be.

As for the Indigo girls… AWESOME! I love them! The only musician I was ever close to was Chris Issak. He jumped up on the chair next to me while performing at the club we were at; I’d had no idea he was going to do that. The spotlight was on us both and he was all sparkly with his guitar and white sparkly suit and SWEATING up a storm and it was…yeah, I’ll never forget that moment.
