Fun Fact Friday
Since Tessie’s off getting lasah’d, I’ve decided to do a Fun Fact Friday in her honor.
* I came to Texas for a week-long visit. That was 11.5 years ago. It’s been a hella long week.
* My family is French Canadian. I was the first one born in the US.
* I hate yard work/gardening with the fire of a thousand suns.
* One of my favorite parts of parenting is that I know Maddie better than anyone. I know her little idiosyncrasies, her meltdown triggers, what to do to make her laugh and a million other facets of her personality. Sometimes I wish I could share all of these things with someone so that they’d see what a wonderful little person she is, but mostly, I love that I’m the only one who knows these things. Well, except for Gerald, of course.
* I’m the driver in my marriage. Gerald hates to drive, so whenever we go anywhere, I drive.
* I cannot say the word “rhinoceros” correctly.
* I’ve had a blog for three years.
* I collect wall crosses. There’s a wall in my bedroom that’s filled with them. A friend saw them for the first time and asked if they were my contingency plan. I figure it can’t hurt.
* I have trouble spelling words out loud. If someone asks me how to spell something, I have to write it down first. It’s no surprise that I’ve never won a spelling bee.
* I love to rearrange the furniture in the rooms of my house. I used to rearrange my room as a kid at least once a month. Unfortunately, my current furniture is super heavy, so we don’t move it very often.
I hope you enjoyed this substitute Fun Fact Friday. Don’t worry, Tessie will be back next week with your regularly scheduled installment.

I am the SAME WAY about spelling out loud. And it pisses me off because on paper I am a near-perfect speller.
I’m the driver in my marriage as well. But not because my husband hates to; it’s because he SUCKS at it.
I love to drive. It’s a control thing with me, though, not from any other less self serving ideal.
Do you speak French as well?
1) I used to have a (male) co-worker who pronounced it “rhino-saucerous.” He didn’t realize he was mispronouncing it. It was surprising how often the subject of rhinoceroses came up.
2) If we are ever under attack by an army of vampires, I’m running to your house.
Jess - It IS annoying, isn’t it?
jmc - *snort*
Shelly - Just a smidge. Enough to get myself into trouble in any french-speaking country. I took spanish in school just to be contrary, so I’m much better at that.
Swistle - I pronounce it “rhiner-ocerous.” Like shiner-ahs-or-us. If I take my time and say it very slowly, I can get it right. Otherwise? I’m looking like a huge goob.
Along with the crosses, I have my encyclopedic knowledge of Buffy to rely on as well. I’d say I’m your best chance at surviving a vampire army.
My husband loves to drive on the interstate, hundreds of miles without any turns or congestion. The monotony drives me crazy. He also hates to drive in the city where he has to follow directions and pay attention to intersections and other cars. So basically, he drives all long trips, I do the short ones.
I love this. You should do it again sometime.
My dad’s heritage is French-Canadian, but I don’t know how far back that goes.
I love how you described knowing Maddie so well (and I bet better than Gerald too). I feel the same way. It’s easier now, but whenever I let someone else do something for him/babysit/watch him for a few moments/whatever, I would give them a detailed rundown of as much as I could. I was bad bad when he was a baby. But I don’t care, I know him best and if someone else is going to do something, they may as well do it right. Now that he can speak for himself or at least show what he wants, it’s easier.
Matt drives. Sometimes he does it too much. I usually only mind when we’re on a long trip. He forgets how tiring it is for me just to sit there. I have to beg him to let me drive for a while.
I used to rearrange my furniture that often when I was young too. It’s harder now with a whole house full. But I’ve been itching to rearrange our bedroom lately. It’s been this way for 4-5 years, and I’m ready for a change. I think it drives Matt nuts though. Oh well, deal with it.
My husband once pronounced it rhino-sauras…like it was a dinosaur! lmfao. The kicker? He was READING A BOOK TO A ROOM FULL OF CHILDREN.
HA HA!!
I am the same way about spelling out loud. I ALWAYS double check by writing it down on the nearest piece of scratch paper I can find.
I am definitely the same way about furniture. It sucks because a lot of the stuff in our house is where it is because that’s the ONLY way it will fit in the space of the room. Our long couch can really only be against one particular wall, our bedrom furniture can only be in the configuration it is currently, because the bed won’t fit anywhere else, etc. And I read somewhere that you should try to avoid rearranging kids’ stuff because familiarity makes them feel secure and they might have trouble sleeping or something if you went and moved their room around. I’ve been holding out a LONG time on rearranging Addy’s room for fear of somehow disturbing her psyche.
This is awesome! I think you should keep doing it too.
I’m the same with spelling. If I can’t write it down, I have to actually PICTURE THE WORD WRITTEN in my head.
Also, you are a first generation American! This is AWESOME! I’m hearing that Coming to America song in my head! Okay, so it’s just Canada but STILL.
