“We’ll let the interwebs name our dog!”
Gerald came home with a dog today. She’s an almost seven year old German Shepard. Apparently, one of his coworkers is a dog foster mom and she nursed her back to health, but already has a herd of dogs, so she can’t keep her. A second coworker took the dog home with her, but quickly discovered the dog’s affinity for chasing cars. (Their land isn’t fenced.) Gerald heard about her and thought we might be a good home for her.
Some of you may remember that we had two Labs and I desperately wanted to get rid of them. We found good homes for both of them, but one ended up staying with us. The male, Sam, went to live with a family with three school-aged kids. The mom still emails me updates and photos of him. They have a female Lab, as well as Sam and they are all happy as can be. The day after Sam went to his new home, our female, Pippin, was supposed to go to her new home. Except Pippin took Sam’s absence really hard. She was visibly upset about it and I didn’t think it was a wise idea for her to leave. I thought that Sam being gone and then her having to go to a new place with new people would be too much for her and she’d act out. So we decided to keep her. Luckily, the lady that was going to take her understood completely and there were no hard feelings.
Pippin still misses her brother. Not him, per se, but another dog to run and play with. We had talked about getting a smaller dog as a companion for her, but decided against it. Looks like the fates had other plans for us. The new dog is settling in just fine. She’s great with Pippin and Maddie and is very mellow. Not at all like our Pip. She’s HYPER and NEUROTIC.
The new dog’s got a breeder’s tattoo in her ear, and the breeder was able to tell the foster mom when the litter was born (March of 2001) and who the owner was. A call to the “owner” proved fruitless. He said that his dog was right where it was supposed to be and he had no idea what they were talking about. So, either he’s lying or the breeder got the owners and tattoo identifiers mixed up. We’ll never know. It makes me sad to know that this sweet girl has a name, but we don’t know what it is. So here’s the deal. We need a name for her. What’s your suggestion? I suggested Merri to go along with Pippin, but she’s just not a “Merri.” I told Gerald that we’ll let the interwebs name her.
What would you name her?

I’m awful at naming, so I am no help to you there, but I just had to say how beautiful your new dog is!
hehe. I like Merri.
Bless you for taking in a dog that needs a home. I’d kill dh if he walked in teh door with another dog. Our one is more than enough. She looks awfully sweet.
I’ll think on a name.
How about Willow?
Pretty, pretty pup!
I want more info before suggesting a name. Any behavioral quirks you can share? Any personality traits that jump out at you??
She looks like a strong, sweet gal. I’ll be over here ruminating on names….
She’s adorable! And you guys are awesome for taking her in. How about Sadie for a name?
Haha! You cannot escape the call of the dog! Shepards are great. They are very smart and have an intimidating bark, even though they are sweet as can be.
I like Sadie too!
I kinda like Merri. What about Meridith or something like that?
I’ve always wanted to name a female dog Daisy (not where I got my screen name). Anyway, I think that would be cute for her. Or as I was thinking about that I thought of Shasta (because of Shasta Daisies), but still that stuck with me. That would be an awesome name.
Or here are some other ideas: Hope, Daphne, Allie, or Angel. OK, I’m tapped now.
Jenna - So far, the only “quirk” is that she doesn’t seem to like cats. We have one, and the dog spends quite a bit of time with her head under the bed watching the cat and barking at her. Otherwise, she’s completely mellow. She doesn’t do much but lie around. I don’t know if it’s her disposition, her age or the fact that she’s had a really rough month. We don’t know anything at all about her previous home or how she came to be wandering around Dallas. She was malnourished and dehydrated when she was found, and who knows if that’s how she was treated, or if she had been stray for a while.
How about a character from the 80’s show “Dallas”? Not that I know any…..
Hmmm…. okay here are my favorites:
Lucy, Sadie (actually our dogs name so don’t say you hate it, please!), Daisy, Gracie, Greta, Daphne, Molly….
Honey
Taffy
Cinnamon (Cinny, for short)
and from Dan:
“whoseagoodgirl?whoseagoodgirl?yesyouare!yesyouare!
but that’d be hard to get on a tag”
Amber - Dan’s not far off from what I’ve been calling her which is “comeonsweetgirl!”
Foxy or Lady, as in Foxy Lady by Jimi Hendrix. Because her tail looks fox-ish and Jimi rules. Yay Dogmama!
How about Moxie? Seems like she has a lot of it!
We named our pets after spices so far…. seems to work for us.
After staring at the picture I can only come up with Sweetheart, for she definitely looks like one.
Congrats on the new doggie.
HUGS!

Grace,
My first suggestion was simply “sweetie”. Then I think ’sweetie darling’ came into the picture and downhill from there : b
