New Year Smell

January 1st, 2008

So, here it is… 2008. A brand-new, sparkling fresh year laid out and waiting for us to make of it what we will. Aren’t you excited?

I’m not making any resolutions this year because I suck at keeping them. This does not mean that I don’t have plans for this year… because I do. BIG PLANS.

First of all, I’m changing careers. Slowly. I’m going to go back to school and become a teacher. I’d like to teach third grade, I think. I’ve been in the finance/investment world for nine years now, so this change is more than a little scary. But, I’ve wanted to be a teacher ever since I was in elementary school and I figured it’s about time. I’ve got a course catalog and application to a local school on my desk right now, just waiting for my perusal.

Next, I’ve talked it over with Gerald and we’ve decided that I should go forward with gastric bypass surgery. I’ve got six months of hoops to jump through before my insurance company will approve it, so I’ll be having the surgery this summer. There aren’t words to describe how excited and empowered I feel about this choice. I know it’s the right thing for me.

Finally, we’re considering moving. We really need a bigger house. When we had this one built three years ago, it was small, but ok for the two of us. Now that Maddie’s here, it’s feeling smaller by the minute. Originally, we were waiting for the opportunity to move to Austin, but that may be a long time in coming. For now, we’re going to stay in the same general area, but move about 20 minutes closer to Dallas, which will help with commuting.

As you can plainly see, I’ve bitten off a lot to chew in 2008. I think I can handle it, though. These are all changes that will benefit us individually and as a family. If nothing else, it should make for good blog fodder : )

Happy New Year, dear blogging friends!

    Erica,

Congrats on your decision! It’s an awesome ride that I will never ever in a million years regret. Might I suggest you check out http://www.bariatriceating.com and consider purchasing Susan Marie Leach’s book which is available there. It’s an awesome site for gastric bypass patients. Any time you’d like to talk, give me a shout. We’re all in this together.

    Hugs~

My god that’s a lot on your plate. I’ve been pondering the teacher career as well, to tell you the truth, but I don’t have the history of wanting to be one so I don’t think I’m “there” yet. So I will be watching to see how it’s going for you; maybe you’ll inspire me. Good luck with 2008.

Holy shit, holy shit! I am so pumped about all of this!

Do you watch that Big Medicine show on TLC? I watched some yesterday and it is so interesting. It’s about docs who do various bariatric-type surgeries.

Email me and tell me where you are going to school/moving to!

Wow that is awesome! Can’t wait to read about everything! Good luck with going to school to be a teacher, if I wasn’t such a goof about being in front of a lot of people I would love to do that too. And you going to move! Lucky girl you are :o )

Erica, congrats on all the decisions you’ve made. Wow, your life will be changing. I wish you the best in this new year. I hope everything goes very well. Good luck on the teaching thing. 3rd graders are great. My favorite is 5th, 4th, then probably 3rd. I hope you love every minute of your new year.

Holy crap! I don’t read your blog for a few weeks and look at what I missed! That’ll teach me– I promise I won’t spend too much time reading books and have conversations ever again!

Seriously, I’m waayyyy impressed with all your big decisions. I can’t imagine the huge decisions of going back to school (for an entire career change), having potentially life-changing surgery and moving.

I can’t wait to read all about it!

Whoa – 2008 is going to be a FULL. I am so inspired by you; you are making your life rather than letting it happen to you. Thank you for sharing all of your exciting news!
