Super Pee-er

December 10th, 2007

I’ve mentioned that Maddie is a great sleeper, right? She routinely sleeps 12 or 13 hours every night. This, in and of itself, is fantastic. However, lately we’ve been having some unpleasant mornings.

Maddie’s a super pee-er. She now fills her diaper and then some every night. In the mornings, I have to change her diaper AND her jammies AND her sheet AND her mattress pad. Dude. DUDE! That is way too damn much work for first thing in the morning.

I blame it all on the sippy cup. Maddie loves her sippy cup and has recently been boycotting the bottle in favor of the sippy cup. She was only having two bottles a day, but is now drinking the equivalent of three or four. All thanks to the sippy cup.

Do they make overnight diapers like they make overnight maxi pads?  Because I’m seriously tired of PEE LAUNDRY. Maybe I should wake her and change her diaper before I go to bed? Deny her all liquids? Wrap her ass in plastic wrap? There has to be a solution that doesn’t involve PEE LAUNDRY.

Yes! Huggies makes overnight diapers. We’ve just started putting Liam in them for the same reason (so tired of soaked sheets and pj’s). I can only find them in size 4 and up and while he’s still a size 3, the size 4’s do fine at night as long as I change him as soon as he wakes up.

Now, please share your secret to sippy cup usage; Liam drinks only about 8 ounces a day out of his. Driving me nuts!

I HAVE seen overnight diapers, but I wonder if she’s in a big enough size yet. I guess for overnight you could just go for it and pull the tabs super tight.

WAKE HER UP WHEN YOU GO TO BED? Whaaaaaaat? No, no, NO!

Jana - Bless you! I will look for the overnighters today when I go to Target. Maddie is only 19.5 lbs, so a size four might still be too big for her. We’ll try, tho!

I’ll tell you what we did for the sippy cup situation, but I can’t promise it will work! First, I used the Nuk cups. They’re five ounces and have a soft, nipple-like spout. They also have handles. I loved them because they were easy to clean and Maddie was able to use them at the age of seven months. The only problem is that they don’t make them in a bigger size. I was putting in four ounces of formula, letting her drink it and then making four more.

Anywho, I started giving her a sippy with water at every meal when she was six months old. At first, I had to hold it for her but that wasn’t a problem for either of us. She drank out of it without a fuss. She didn’t care that the nipple was different, which is what I worried about.

In the last two months, Maddie’s not been wanting a bottle. She wants to be up and playing. She doesn’t have time to lie still and drink a bottle. She would only drink one first thing in the morning and right before bed. Then, she stopped wanting to drink one first thing in the morning. So, last week, I decided to put her in her excersaucer and give her a sippy cup of formula. TADA! She drank it right down and wanted more. I still try to give her a bottle in the morning, but if she won’t take it or only drinks some, I give it to her in a cup. And then she gets more in the afternoon, between lunch and dinner.

Last night, I found some great new cups at wal-yick-mart. They’re by Nuby and they’re “convertible.” They hold nine ounces and come with a nipple, a sippy cup and a straw-like spout. They’re all soft like nipples, not hard plastic. Maddie uses the sippy lid during the day, but I can put a nipple on for her bedtime bottle. I really like them. They’re $6 a piece, so maybe get one and see if you can get Liam to like the cup with a nipple and then switch the lid and he won’t notice because the cup’s the same. Seems like it might be easy to trick him : )

    Hope that helps!

Tessie - SHUT UP! I know it’s a stupid idea, but I’m so tired of doing a load of her laundry every day.

I remember going through this with Zachariah, probably about the same age too. I looked at overnight diapers, but I decided against them when I saw the cost. Might be worth it to you though. Acutally I think I just put the new bigger size diaper on at night. That seemed to help. And he did outgrow that too. It was just a stage for us.

Pee laundry totally sicks. ESPECIALLY when there are all of the sheets involved. I’m not sure I have any good solutions for you other than perhaps zipping her bottom half up in a ziploc at night, but if memory serves, that’s some sort of major safety taboo! So I suppose we could all put our internet heads together and come up with the next great must-have mommy-tool!

When our LO was having a similar issue just #2 instead, using the next size of diaper from whst she normally wears at night seemed to help that issue.

Thanks for the sippy cup tips….will be heading to Target tomorrow.

Daisy - I split the difference. The overnight diapers are a size four and she currently only wears a three. I’m hoping between the bigger size and the “overnight”ness, we’ll have a dry morning.

Mothy - Dude, I just called you “mothy.” Like MOTHRA. Can I call you MOTHRA? Anyhow, you think I’m joking with the ziplock bag? Cuz, I’m not.

MB - Welcome! Um, I think you’re new, because I don’t recognize you. But if you’re not new, then welcome anyway : ) Thank you for making me realize that while PEE LAUNDRY sucks, at least it’s not POOP LAUNDRY. Amen.

You can call me anything. You can call MEEE AAA-LLLLL. God. Remember that one?

Would that Press and Seal plastic wrap fall under the safety-deficient category? That would be cool. Just wrap around the waist and PRESS TO SEAL!!!

On the practical side, with Diva we had crib sheet protector things that tied to the crib slats. I’ll forward you a link if I can find them online. But it would only work if you have slats on both sides. Or do I recall you having one of those high-fallootin’ sleigh cribs???

We tried the huggies overnights and they LEAKED worse than the regular huggies. I think Zoe’s butt changed shape or something.

I have heard of moms using two diapers. One on the babe and another one, one size bigger on top of the first. Don’t know if that works but we may be headed there as well.
