Chistmasy Goodness
This is Maddie’s first Christmas and I found the perfect way to commemorate it over at Maybe Painted Pink. I made salt dough ornaments with her hand print in them.
First, I made the dough. Not hard at all. Then, I separated it into two batches and added food coloring. Red to one batch and green to the other. This worked well, but since I’m not at all crafty, I soon messed it up. I got red dough in the green and vice versa. So, I ended up painting them when they were done. But the food coloring helps mask any spots I missed with the paint. Finally, I sealed them, labeled them and added some ribbon for hanging.
It’s kinda hard to read in the pic because of the shiny sealer, but it says “Maddie’s First Christmas 2007.” We have one on our tree and we’re giving one to the grandparents and great-grandparents for Christmas. I’m hoping to start it as an annual tradition and to one day have years and years worth of hand print ornaments.
And in other Christmas-related news, Gerald came home with a present for me yesterday. A new phone! And it’s red! I love it!

That ornament thing is a great idea! We did something similar as kids, but we didn’t use handprints. I think that would have been cooler.
Yeah, Gerald and I have some that we made as kids, but they’re shapes like stars and bells. No hand prints. This seemed to mark the occasion more for me. A reminder of how small she once was.
Those ornaments turned out great. I never got Zachariah’s hand (or foot) print when he was little. We just did a Hallmark ornament for his first Christmas. But I love the idea of a tradition that you can do every year. As she gets older, she’ll probably want to add her own flare to it.
Oh nice phone!
As we were making them, I could picture future Christmases with her and glitter and paint everywhere. I can’t wait!
OMG! Your security code ate my comment AGAIN! ARGH! I have to remember to copyandpaste BEFORE I “submit”. GRRR!
Anyway love the phone, template and the cookie ornaments. I finally had to toss my kids’ cookie ornaments a few years back as they had crumbled into nothing and Dan had to gently point out I was hanging up unrecognizable cruddy look stuff at the end of the hook. You can bet I was pretty teary-eyed when I did. Enjoy!
Seriously??? I’m sorry, Amber. I’ll ask Gerald to check it out.
Our Christmas tree currently has a salt dough ornament on it that Gerald made in 1976… coincidentally the year in which I was born. We also have a milk carton house that I made in kindergarten.
GREAT IDEA! I was trying to think of something I could make with my nephew. I babysit him a couple of times a week and I wanted to make something special for his first Christmas! This is the PERFECT thing!
Thankyou thankyou thankyou!
HUGS!

You’re welcome. I was pretty stoked about it, too. Better than a store-bought “Baby’s First Christmas” ornament, in my opinion. Not that I’m dogging those at all. I almost bought one for Maddie until I read Kara Marie’s post.
super cute ornaments and LOVE the phone.
I may have to try the ornaments, though Zoe refuses to finger paint or do anything remotely dirty-making so it may be a wash.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t messy at all. For Maddie, that is. I was a mess. Flour and food coloring EVERYWHERE. But all we did was mash Maddie’s chubby little paws into the circles. She needed a damp rag clean up and that’s it. However, as the years go by and she gets more involved, I’m sure the mess factor will increase exponentially.
We just made salt dough ornaments today!! Great minds…
Indeed! I can’t wait until Maddie’s as old as d. I bet he really enjoyed it.
Too cute! Look at you being all crafty, mama! Love the phone. Gerald can send one to me if he would like, as well!
Dude, “crafty” I am not. But I tried hard. You gotta suck it up and do this stuff when you’re a mom, right? Right.
Oh, those are awesome! The grandparents and great-grandparents will LOVE them.
I made some ornaments last night (still have to paint/design them) to give as gifts to my co-workers.
Every day, red grows more and more to be my favorite color. Yay to early presents!!
P.S. The site looks great!
Those would also be really cute in a long line on the wall, to show how the hand grew.
Erica, what’s happening (I think) is that I open up all the blogs I read every morning at once but because my mornings are so busy, it can sometimes take me a long time to actually read them then make comments. By the time I finish reading and try to post, this page has been open too long and the security code has changed. So it gives me an error. Which I don’t mind, but when I try to back up and retrieve my typically long-assed comment, it’s gone. I don’t know if anything can be done about it, though.
It’s okay, I’ll just learn to copy first. I have to do that with haloscan anyway since they so often go all “blooey” as it is.
