Favorite things about this time of year

1. Christmas Lights: They make me feel so good. I have no explanation for it. One of my favorite memories of childhood was our yearly trip to see the lights at Nela Park. When I see a tastefully decorated home, or town square, I get all happy inside. I am a light snob, though. I don’t like flashing lights at all. I’m not too keen on multi-colored, either. And God forbid if someone has a hodgepodge. You know, half flashing, half not and not at all matching. *shudder*

2. Christmas Music: Specifically Barenaked Ladies “Barenaked for the Holidays” and Harry Connick, Jr. “When My Heart Finds Christmas.” I wait all year for the day I pull the CDs from their sleeves and transfer them to the car. (This year, they got uploaded to the iPod.) Favorites within favorites: BNL - God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (duet with Sarah McLachlan). Harry: It Must Have Been ol’ Santa Claus. Good stuff, people. Good stuff.

3. Hot Beverages: Hot chocolate with marshmallows, caramel apple cider, chai tea, peppermint mocha, and gingerbread latte.

4. Eggnog: ’nuff said.

5. Snow: Sadly, I haven’t had a white Christmas in quite a few years. As a child though, it was almost always a sure thing. God bless lake-effect snow.

6. Hanukkah: In high school, my best friend was Jewish. I learned all about the Jewish holidays and was present every year for the celebrations. Passover Seders were fun, but Hanukkah was the best. Noodle kugel and latkes, Dreidels and chocolate coins. And it all lasts eight days. Eight. Days. Why can’t we get Christmas on that bandwagon?

What about you? What are some of your favorite things about this time of year?

  1. oh the lights definitely and I too am a light snob. I can’t wait to put our lights up outside. We already did the entire inside of the house - but since we did it so early I will probably end up buying more decorations. I’m praying for snow - my child will absolutely flip out if he doesn’t get a sled and use it this year (he has been talking about it for over a year). Also I love baking cookies. No one in our house eats them so we give them away but I love baking with christmas songs playing in the kitchen

  2. I hate blinking lights too. GAH. I don’t like those all-blue ones, either, unless it’s a Hanukkah theme.

Most of my Favorite Things have to do with food and coffee. I always feel more like cooking. I love the Seasons Eatings stuff on The Food Network too.

  3. That caramel apple cider sounds fabulous!

I always enjoy making and decorating holiday cut-out cookies with my daughter. They don’t look great, but they taste yummy!

  4. My favorite thing about Christmas is the music, I think. I get out the music day after Thanksgiving, and I really don’t get tired of it, although I think Jim does! And I also really love the candlelight Christmas Eve service. Gives me goosebumps every time.

  5. Christmas cookies…DUH!

Oh, and all the stuff you mentioned!

    HUGS!

  6. Those are all great things about Christmas.

I like redecorating the inside of my house. It’s the only holiday I do that for. I like Christmas music everywhere. (I haven’t stopped listening to it since this weekend.) I like Christmas movies on TV. I like spending time with family and playing games. I love shopping for other people. And there are so many other things, but that’s what popped in my head for now.

  7. The lights (but only tasteful ones ;)

The nog, the spicy taste of hot cider, hot cocoa, & really anything warm and seasonal!

The tree with packages and a fire in the fire place.

Snow (and better yet a snow day the day before the holiday for an extra day off from work!)

    Running around in the snow!

Any food related item esp. cookies

Finally, the music that I break out the minute Thanksgiving roles around!

  8. I like: colder weather in Florida, Christmas lights, decorating my tree, amen to Eggnog, and giving gifts :o)

  9. I Loooovvvvvve lights. I wish we could have them up all year. I agree about hodge-podge.

I like Adam Sandler’s Hanukkah song. Makes me laugh every time.
