Maddie’s First Halloween: Officially Ruined

November 1st, 2007

I had expected to post this morning and share pictures of Maddie in her costume and regale you with tales of our candy-passing-out adventures. Instead, I get to tell you about our trip to the emergency room.

Around 5:00 or so, I was carrying Maddie through the kitchen and one of my horses dogs got underfoot and tripped me. I fell forward onto the ceramic tile while holding Maddie. It happened too fast for me to turn around so that she landed on top of me. And it happened so slow that I saw every horrifying moment with vivid clarity. I landed on my knee and Maddie landed on her face. Her forehead and chin, specifically.

I was absolutely hysterical. I’m pretty sure I scared her worse than she would have been otherwise. We finally calmed down enough to assess the situation. Maddie threw up after the fall, so I was concerned about concussion. Gerald and I took her to the ER and we were in and out in a hour. (Thank you, Baylor!) They said she was fine and sent us home with instructions to wake her a couple of times during the night and to give her Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

We made it home by about 7:15 and I was able to pass out a little candy. We had maybe five visits total. I let kids take two candy bars and pick out whichever ones they wanted. The highlight was a little spider-man who shouted to his mom “WOW! They have BIG candy bars!!” He was adorable. Most of the kids expressed delight for the real thing and were polite and gracious. I was impressed.

We had quite a bit of candy leftover, so Gerald took it to work today. Too bad, really, because my sore knee could really use a a frozen Snickers bar. You know, to ice it.

I did manage to snap a few pics of Maddie in her costume a little earlier in the afternoon. They’re not great, because I was hoping to get some better shots in the evening. That’ll teach me, huh?

(Oh, and if anyone’s interested in a Lab or two, they’re free for the taking.)

It’s faint, but the bruise goes all the way across her forehead.

Angela: “Erica, are you sure you and Gerald want two puppies?”. “Believe me, you DON’T want two puppies”.
Erica: “Yes, we are sure, they are so cute”.
Above- Erica’s famous last words on getting two puppies…

I’m so sorry, this must have been scary. My dogs have tripped me SO many times. Glad you’re both okay and you still have some full-sizers to console you.

my dog got me in the middle of the night and I fell down the stairs (thankfully sans baby)not too long ago. we need to teach him not to sleep outside the bedroom door. i’m glad she’s ok and the ER was fast for you – our first trip was at 11 at night and we got home at 4 am then all had to go to work. THE END That stuff is the worst though. Just the idea of concussions scares the crap out of me

    I’m so sorry!

It never fails, you think about things and how you want them to be and in a blink of an eye, they are all ruined!

The good news is, she won’t even remember it!

    Extra HUGS!

Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. Mimi’s had a stomach bug and threw up on me 10+ times on her first Halloween. It gets better, I promise.

Oh dear! I’m sorry her first halloween didn’t go better, but I’m SO glad she’s alright!!

That is such a terrible Halloween story, I actually LAUGHED, in that “This isn’t funny! Why am I laughing??” way. Or perhaps in the “I was ONLY alarmed until you said she was fine and then said that thing about icing your knee with a Snickers” way.

I’m so sorry Maddie’s first Halloween didn’t go as planned. If it’s any consolation, she’s the cutest little pumpkin I’ve ever seen.

You didn’t save a Snickers! Girl, I need to send you a pack of Snickers for that knee, clearly. Poor Maddie. I’m glad you’re both ok.

One Halloween both of my younger sisters had chicken pox (curtesy of the case of shingles I had a week or so before). So, I was the only one allowed trick-or-treating. But I shared ALL my candy with my sisters when I got home. Really, I did. Plus most of the neighbors knew that they were sick, so they gave us extra candy. How nice! The good news is Maddie is young enough not to remember (you could always hide the pictures), but my sisters were old enough to remember. And instead of remembering how nice I was to bring them candy, they just remember that I was the ONLY one who got to trick-or-treat. HA!

Awesome that the kids loved the full-sized bars. You rock!

I’m glad everyone is okay. What do we have to look forward to for Thanksgiving?! Sorry. That was meant to make you smile. If it didn’t I’m sitting here wringing my hands and feeling like an asshat…

I gasped and read very rapidly until you said she was okay after all. Whew! I remember doing that, maybe a couple of times; can’t remember with which one, but I remember falling with them and being completely freaked out.

Glad you guys are (relatively) okay! :)
