Make-up and fudge
Make-up - Have any of you used that Bare Escentuals/Bare Minerals stuff? I keep thinking about getting it, but I’m scared to buy make-up without seeing it in person, you know? And $60 is a lot to blow if I hate it.
And if you have other suggestions, besides the mineral-y stuff, feel free to share that, too. Here’s my criteria: I don’t want to look like I’m heavily made-up. All I wear is concealer, pressed powder, mascara and gloss. I wear eyeshadow if it’s a dressy/special occasion, and I never wear liner. (I always feel like I look like a crack whore when I have it on. Weird, huh?) Really, what I’m looking for is something to even out my skin tone and sort of freshen me up a bit. What works for you?
Fudge - I need your recipes for fudge. Chocolate walnut and peanut butter, to be precise. I’ve been craving it for a long time, and instead of buying some, I want to make it. Here’s the glitch - fudge is my baking kryptonite. I cannot make it to save my life. It ALWAYS turns out crappy. Do you have any fail-proof recipes? Or a URL where I can just buy some pre-made fudge and skip the horror and heartache?

I definitely recommend Skaarup’s Fantasia Fudge

You have to follow the recipe exactly though.
Skaarup used to have a whole website, all about how temperature and crystallization and evaporation affect the outcome of fudge (I have a science degree, can you tell?). Anyway, I can’t find the website now, so maybe it doesn’t exist anymore. But the recipe is still out there, so that is what I would suggest.
I’m going to try it, thank you! I think I need to have a “fudge weekend” and try all the recipes and then report back. Problem is, I’d have to EAT all that fudge. I mean, that’s not necessarily a problem for me… just for my butt.
No make-up advice. I wear a little, but I’m never confident about it. I need a good foundation or something to even me out too. I don’t have money to spend on it for now, so I just don’t think about it. All that to say I’ll be no help on this one.
Fudge! Fudge I can do. I’ve flopped it a few times, but usually I do pretty well. Though I don’t make it often, I have some great fudge recipes from my mom. I don’t have access to them at the moment, but I’ll try to remember to hunt them down tomorrow. Then I’ll post them on my blog. How about that? If I have enough stuff to make some, I will and post pictures too. Plus we have a great family peanut butter fudge recipe.
You are my HERO, Daisy!!!!! Thank you!
LOVE MY BARE MINERALS! Wouldn’t go a day without it, and I find it to be SUPER convenient and mommy-friendly. Totally worth the cash.
That’s exactly what I wanted to hear. I think I had already made up my mind to buy it, but just needed someone to confirm that I was not retarded for doing so.
I think Sundry did a thing on that kind of make-up. I haven’t tried it.
I make fudge, but it is a tricky recipe. I always allow time to screw up the first batch and have to make a second.
Eyeliner. I’ve found that a medium brown pencil works nicely: very little Crack Whore, more like Possibly Has Eyelashes After All.
I need to check out the Sundry Buzz, don’t I? And brown eyeliner, too. My lashes are very light and not very lush. Possibly Has Eyelashes After All would be a new look for me, that’s for sure.
I’m glad to know even Mrs. Betty-Crocker-Swistle has trouble with fudge, too. I don’t feel so bad about it now.
You would probably love bare minerals. It is easy and not heavy so I thought that was great but my skin tone is so uneven and I can get really red so it really didn’t cover well enough for me. I’m back to clinique during the work week and bare minerals on the weekend
as for fudge, I used a recipe from allrecipes.com last time and it was good and EASY but I don’t know which one it was. I always just get on there and look for a recipe with 5 stars and lots of reviews. (to be honest on fudge I have given up because it tends to be grainy for me so I go to a lovely place in st. charles that makes it and it RULES - i will cook/bake anything but fudge and I do not get along)
I’m not too terribly uneven. I’ve got some redness around my nose and the occasional blemish to cover. I think I’m going to give it a shot.
What is it about fudge?? I’m not afraid of any other recipe, but fudge intimidates the crap out of me. Mine is always grainy and yucky. I’m sure it’s the crystallization going wrong. Who needs that much science when they cook??? Not me!
I don’t know anything about Bare Minerals. However, my grandmother owned a makeup “salon” (as they were known in days of yore) and my mom had one too and I’ve grown up around makeup and skin care, yatta yatta, all my life.
And I will not buy makeup without trying it on my skin first. Been burned too many times over the years.
In case you don’t know, you can call any department store in your area, like a Macy’s, if they have makeup departments and for FREE FREE FREE, you sit in a chair and the cosmetician (well, they probably aren’t always cosmeticians, but you can ask ahead of time for one if it’s that important) asks you what kind of look you are looking for and makes up your face according to what you have told her.
If you’re happy with it, you buy the product. If not, move on to the next makeup line. Who also will give you a free makeover.
Currently I use the line “Prescriptives” through my local Macy’s because it’s great for my skin, has a light feel and look (I can’t stand being overly made-up either) and isn’t TOO expensive. Plus I can pick and choose what I want this way.
Can’t do that with those kits.
As for kits, like the Bare Minerals thing…I’m wary of stuff like that. I’ve purchased kits before, usually through a friend who starts working for some home-based line. Not only do I end up not using many of the products at all but several times now I’ve broken out.
And I almost NEVER break out, ever.
I wouldn’t buy makeup if I couldn’t test it first on my skin. No reason to with free makeovers. Just my opinion.
just a thought - do you have a sephora anywhere near? They carry the bare minerals line and will let you try it all on in the store before you blow the big bucks on it
I’m on a mission to make oreo fudge too. YUM!
