Ink

September 13th, 2007

I have tattoos. Several of them, in fact. Not enough to make me look like a biker or a circus performer, but more than three.

I’ve been seriously considering getting a Maddie-inspired tattoo. I’d like to commemorate my transition to motherhood with a permanent reminder of my daughter. The trouble is, I can’t think of what to get or where to put it. Currently, all my tattoos are easily covered by clothing. No one has to know that I have any at all, unless I choose to let them be seen. In professional settings, I don’t feel like I stick out or look inappropriate. I like that. I’m sort of running out of places to put a tattoo that can 1. be covered easily and 2. also be shown without indecency. I don’t want to blush when I show someone my Maddie tat!

So, what are your thought on the matter? Do you have any tattoos? Would you get a tattoo honoring your child(ren)? Do you already have one? If so, what is it or what would it be? I’m not going to steal your idea or get a matching tattoo, I promise. I’m just hoping something you say will spark an idea for my own ink.

I don’t have any tattoos (too chicken), but it seems to me that the child-related tattoo is the one kind that you would almost certainly never regret.

I do have a really cool necklace from RedEnvelope.com that has the chinese symbol for mother/daughter on it. I wear that pretty much every day. But maybe the whole “chinese symbol” thing is tired and lame now? I don’t know.

I don’t know if it’s lame. I guess I’m not on the cutting edge of tattoo fashion. I think it’s a cool idea.

I don’t have any tattoos, but I’ve thought about one for each child, something tiny and one-color and not very obvious if I was in business casual attire.

But then I get stuck on the “what” too.

If I ever get a great idea, I’ll let you know.

I have one. It’s a tulip and it’s on my butt cheek for the reason you mentioned: no one sees it unless I want them to. I got it right out of college just because I wanted one and tulips are my favorite flowers. Of course, I always have to make sure that my swimsuit is dark so that it won’t show through.

I hadn’t really thought about getting tattoos to honor my kids. I have seen women with a tatoo of their babies’ newborn footprints on their bellies or on a boob (near their heart). They looked kinda cool to me.

If you have a special nickname for her that you know will stick forever you could always use that for a template idea.

I’ve been leaning toward her footprint, actually. I have a tattoo that I want to cover up, and it seems like her footprint outta do it. It just so happens to be over my heart, too.

THE SAME. I want tattoos, and child-related ones seem like the only ones I’d permanently like. But I don’t know what to get. I’ve thought about doing vital stats: name and date of birth, for example.

I figured everything and everyone else may come and go, but Maddie will always be my daughter. I’m pretty sure I won’t live to regret a Maddie tattoo.
Names and dates of birth is good. Kinda “Angelina.”

Also, I think you should post photos of the tattoos you already have! And I want to hear all about how much they hurt and how long they took and how much they cost and how you decided what to get done. ALL ABOUT IT.

Says the woman who’s face I’ve never seen and real name I’ve never heard.

Yes, tell us about your tatoos. I love that everyone has stories for each one. It’s kinda fun.

I will never get a tatoo. I don’t even think about it. I’m not really into them. They’re ok for other people, but not me (I guess). I’m pretty conservative when it comes to things like that. That’s probably why.

They’re certainly not for everyone, that’s for sure.

I know I’m a bit late on this one but I thought I would throw in my two cents -
my dad, an artist, designed a “logo” for our wedding invitations with our initials in the shape of a start (very celtic looking actually). we got them done as tatoos for our first wedding anniversary. I’ve asked him to do another star with our son’s initials for my next tatoo and will probably do the same for any other children we have. if you know a good artist/graphic designer they might be able to come up with something great (but it may cost you money unless they’re your dad . . .)
