What’s love got to do with it?

July 25th, 2007

So, here I am, thinking Maddie’s got a cold. I sent her to the babysitter’s yesterday and went to work. Last night, she was miserable. Crusty-eyed, puffy-faced and pissed. I took her to the pediatrician this morning and it turns out her “cold” is really a sinus, ear and double eye infection. Three prescriptions worth of sickness.

I feel terrible. If I had taken her to he doctor when she first got sick, she’d be almost better by now. Just when I think I’m getting the hang of this parenting thing, life pulls an Ike Turner and bitch slaps me right across the mouth.

This still happens to me ALL the time. I feel like whenever I take them to the doctor, it’s either (a) “Why didn’t you bring this poor, suffering child in EARLIER, you bad, neglectful parent?” or (b) “Why are you bringing in this child over every little sniffle, you overreacting, hysterical, time-wasting parent?”

I hope she’s feeling better soon. Poor baby. Like Swistle said, you just can’t win them all.

Exactly, Swistle. Maybe I should just become one of those religious people that shuns the use of modern medicine. That would solve the whole “do I or don’t I call the dr” routine.

Or, I could just become a dr myself.

    Thanks, Daisy : )

I often fall into Swistle’s Group A. One time my daughter seemed not quite herself so I took her to see the (on-call) pedi. It turns out she had a terrible ear infection and when the doc offered a prescription for a painkiller and I said we’d just use Tylenol, she gave me this horrified look. She never let me live it down.

So, you’re definitely not alone. Live and learn, I suppose.

We were always told as adults that the doctor wouldn’t even see us for a “cold” unless it lasted over a week. With the baby he has since said we don’t need to come unless there’s a fever. So, if you felt until recently that it was a cold and it only recently really turned ugly, don’t beat yourself up about it. Thank goodness though in those first months for a patient doctor who would call us back and tell us if we were doing all right. :) Oh, and my friend the peds doctor also admits that she will be taking her child to another doctor as she won’t trust her own judgment, she has a pact made with another female doctor and they plan to swap kids for said ills to check themselves, so see, we’re fine!
