Hair Dilemma
Since I got pregnant, I’ve been growing out my hair. I thought I’d take advantage of the pregnancy hormone-induced-super-fast-growing hair. So far, it’s grown out to my shoulders and it’s shiny and pretty. Except, in the last couple of weeks, it’s falling out in clumps. All of the sudden, my hair is EVERYWHERE except on my freakin’ head. I read about postpartum hair loss, but jeezy creezy! This is ridiculous! Anyone know how long this lasts?
Now, onto intentional hair loss. My dad is getting married on Saturday afternoon, so I’ve got a hair appointment that day. I was originally planning to get a trim and have my stylist do something to it so that it looks vaguely attractive in the wedding photos. Bonus points if it makes me look 50 lbs thinner, too. Anyhow, now I’m not sure about a trim vs. a cut. So here are the pros and cons to each:
Trim - Pros
My hair is almost long enough for a ponytail. I’ve got a few shorter layers up front that require a clip, but it’s not too bad. Ponytails make weekend hair easier.
My hair is shiny and pretty. I don’t need any products in it, so it’s soft, too.
Trim -Cons
Maddie has started to grab my hair.
As soon as I get home, my hair goes into a ponytail. It’s hot and gets in my face.
My hair is very wavy and it’s a pain in the ass to blow dry it and smooth it out every morning. And no, I don’t know how to make it pretty when air-dried. It just looks like a wavy, frizzy mess.
Cut - Pros
My hair will be an actual style, not just hair.
Short hair takes waaaay less time to blow dry.
Maddie won’t be able to pull it.
Cut - Cons
Short hair has to be washed and styled every single freakin’ day.
No ponytail.
Products = stiff and not shiny and soft.
So, what do you think? Keep on growing or whack it all off? Help a sister out, wouldja?

Hey - remember me? I commented a LONG time ago, and even though I haven’t commented since, I’ve been enjoying your blog and seeing pics of your beautiful daughter.
Anyway, I’m having the same internal debate. My hair is longer than it’s ever been but is in a ponytail all the time. I’m tired of it being up, but I’m just as tired of having it yanked by tiny hands (Liam just turned 5 months). And mine is falling out in clumps, too. So sad.
I’ll be interested to see what other commenters suggest. Have a good time at your dad’s wedding!
I have the same dilemma right now, so I’m no help. I don’t know if I should grow it long enough so I can put it up (summertime, new baby), or cut it shorter so it has some sort of style I can put it in (wedding to attend). I’m leaning toward growing it out, though: I’ll be miserable if I CAN’T put it up this summer, and I can still make it fairly nice for special occasions by using a pretty clip and taking more time twisting it up.
I say keep on growing. A bit of a trim will keep it in good shape.
My daughter was also born in Jan, so I am also experiencing the hair loss. It is everywhere! I am trying hard to resist the urge to chop.
Long hair takes longer to blow dry but doesn’t have to be washed every day. I also have wavy hair. If I use a little mousse before I blow it, then it looks great the second day as well. And in a pinch on the third day, I can pull it back in a ponytail.
Short hair sounds great, but it always ends up being more work!
My hair was really long before I had my son. I kept it that way until about 2 weeks ago. I cut close to 8 inches off. I don’t mind going long to short, though, my hair grows fast. It’s shoulder-length now and barely fits into a ponytail if I want it to.
My son was also a hair puller. Since it was so long, it didn’t take much for him to get ahold of it. Now that it’s a bit shorter, I love it. I wish I would have cut it like this a while ago. For the next baby - I won’t have my hair long like that.
So, my advice…do what you really want. Don’t worry about it too much. Hair grows back.
Whatever works the fastest. As long as you don’t pull a “Britney”, it will work.
I will always be thankful that I can just take the clippers to my hair. No blow dryer for me in the morning.
Long hair is tough for the summer months, yet I always liked it better on my wife.
I guess I’m no help here.
I like long hair on women, period. But that’s just my opinion.
And you know what they say about opinions, right?
Do what makes you feel good about yourself.
She’ll learn to stop pulling your hair. My hair was mid-back for both babies and I don’t remember hair-pulling being an issue, which means in the long run it didn’t mean much.
This is my first comment on your blog :=) I would do whatever makes you feel prettiest. Short hair looks awful on me but I know a lot people who look really cute with short hair. Also, I just wanted to mention that my hair fell out A LOT for about six months after my son was born but it’s much better now.
Your hair will stop falling out when your daughter is grown, and no longer needs you. In other words….never! My son was born 1988 and my hair is still falling out! And there are times you will pull it out! Whatever you do, stay on the right side of the law. You leave hairs and evidence everywhere you go!
I like long hair. I don’t like spending time on my hair. And ponytails are easy and cooler than short hair to me.
