Are people really buying this?

I was surfing today and ran across and article on msn.com about the book The Secret. I know several people who are reading this book and following it’s principles, but I, personally, didn’t know what it was about until I read the excerpt.

This is a portion of the excerpt on msn.com:
The most common thought that people hold, and I held it too, is that food was responsible for my weight gain. That is a belief that does not serve you, and in my mind now it is complete balderdash! Food is not responsible for putting on weight. It is your thought that food is responsible for putting on weight that actually has food put on weight. Remember, thoughts are primary cause of everything, and the rest is effects from those thoughts.
Think perfect thoughts and the result must be perfect weight.

Let go of all those limiting thoughts. Food cannot cause you to put on weight, unless you think it can.

(Font bolded by me for emphasis.)

Um, excuse me? Would it not be more accurate if that last sentence read, “Food cannot cause you to put on weight, unless you consume more than your body requires?” What kind of pablum is this author feeding people? All you have to do is think happy thoughts and your life will be perfect? Don’t take any responsibility for your situation other than thinking about it?

I’m a firm believer in the benefits of a positive outlook. I know that negativity can spread like wildfire. I wholeheartedly agree that positive visualization works for some people. However, telling people that all you have to do to be your ideal body weight is think that food will not make you fat is ridiculous. And the people that believe this nonsense of hers have my deepest sympathies.

Rhonda Byrne, you ought to be ashamed of yourself.

  1. As should Oprah, who has featured this nonsense on her show! In a favorable light! I mean, that is just a misuse of power. I generally tend to think of Oprah as having at least a little more integrity and substance to her program than most talk shows, but that’s just crap.

  2. “It is your thought that food is responsible for putting on weight that actually has food put on weight.” HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! HA!

  3. Whoa…I didn’t realize this was what it was all about. We should ask Ceeci, I think she is reading it.

The biggest problem is this, I always consider myself to have the same body as a super model. Unfortunately, the person that is looking back at me in the mirror has the body type of Rosie O’donnell.

So, it’s not working people…it’s just NOT working…LOL

    HUGS!
